Brooklyn is finally take shape. It was announced yesterday that JTA sold land across from the Riverside YMCA to Hallmark Partners. Under current plans, the project will include 250 residential units, two restaurants and other retail space.

Brooklyn Mixed Use Project Planned

The article made no mention of affordable housing units so I popped over to Metro Jacksonville assuming there will be a heated discussion on the lack of affordable housing units in the project, but the discussion is about extending the Skyway. Will this new development hamper extension of the Skyway into Brooklyn? It seems to me that the only thing preventing the extension of the Skyway is the Skyway.

Lakelander brings up an excellent point about the developers of the project footing some of the bill for transportation infrastructure:

Why can’t a similar funding mechanism be set up for urban projects, in which developers put their fair share of transportation improvements to help expand and maintain the skyway and downtown trolley system instead. In return, for their contribution, they could be allowed to construct denser projects, creating a higher return in profits.
