The St. John rendering courtesy of Metro Jacksonville
Two big news items popped late yesterday the first was the announcement of The St. John, a new luxury high-rise condo development on the Southbank. We have known about the St. John for some time now, I guess this just means it is official. The second, Peyton’s Roadmap to the Future, we hope to post on later today.
Forgive me for not jumping out of my seat with excitement. I’m not holding my breath and I won’t believe it until I see metal in the ground and cranes in the sky. Any rosey ideals I had of development announcements were ruined when The Related Group pulled out of the San Marco Village project. That’s all they really are in the end, announcements. Although the article does say they plan to start pre-sales next month.

I’m pretty confident this will happen. Hines is in better financial shape than Related (who is taking a hit on their Miami investments) and this project is MUCH smaller in nature (300 units vs. 2,000 units).
I am disappointed that Peyton’s roadmap doesn’t have a guiding principle for saving some land to NOT BE DEVLOPED. Jesus, the way this city is going every single damn thing is going to to be paved over soon. Remember when there were TREES on JTB? Imagine that.
If you want to see Jacksonville’s future, take a drive out to Panama City Beach, Florida. There is no public beach left. There are 1000-story condos on one side of the road with each one’s matching parking garage on the other. When you drive down front beach road, you literally cannot see the sun - it’s like driving through a tunnel. They also have a problem now with about 2000 of those condos sitting empty. The developers are freaking. But that’s the direction Jacksonville is headed - anybody can build anything anywhere as long as they throw the City some money. It’s disgusting.
Is it just me, or is that tower leaning? :)
YES! I remember when there were trees on JTB, hell I even remember when there were trees on beach blvd!
I think it is so laughable that everyone says things are messed up, the citizens, the media and City Hall. Yet things continue to stay the same.
I just know Jacksonville is on the road to becoming the next Orlando. Oh well, at least in Jacksonville you can make a U-turn.
I really, really want them to keep Friendship Fountain. I love being able to see it from the bridges; to me, it’s an integral part of Southbank.
