Looks like the FCAT story ran today, like Charlie talked about.
This is the hottest thing in the Jacksonville blogosphere right now! Furiously, regrettably… lays into Jack Rabbit’s (in San Marco) promoter Tim Hall for his less than savory promoting activities (Ricotta Park)

There is a great discussion going on at the SPAR message board on grocery stores in Springfield. Make sure and read Derek’s post, he makes a particularly good point on small groceries dotted around the neighborhood in favor of one large store.

That is not a great discussion and is typical of most SPAR members and meetings. Just pissing in the wind.
What the hell - Trader Joe’s, Quality Foods…HARRIS TEETER. HARRIS TEETER are they insane. Since everyone has it figured out maybe they could head over to headquarters and give Winn Dixie a hand. Hey I’m frustrated with the 40’s and the scratch-offs too. But until we get an influx of residents/taxpayers, a grocery store will not open, and it damn sure will not be any of these.
I love and believe in Springfield, but she isn’t there yet.
But hey, at least you respect those who have dreams…
Winn Dixie couldnt care less about downtown or Springfields shifting demographics. They cant even keep the store clean or the registers running during peak hours (Some how the Gateway Publix manages it though, so its not the areas demographics). What makes you think they care of every one of us went and stood on thier front porch and screamed bloody murder.
Listen, no body I have spoken to is unrealiztic about this, just hopeful.
Good observations. San Marco can’t even get a grocery store, so I doubt Trader Joes will be knocking on our door anytime soon. The point I wanted to make is the fact that the discussion even existed.
Compared with some of the other discussions lately on the SPAR message board, this one is good. Sure, there are those who go back and forth at SPAR meeting and blow a lot of hot air, but there are also those like me and DTP and Karen Kuaffman of Springfield Animal Rescue who are doing something to make a difference in tha hood.
Remember pissing in the wind is only bad if you are pissing up wind.

Tim Hall royally screwed a friend’s band out of their money at their last gig. The man is garbage.
Springfield and Downtown both suffer from the same thing….a lack of density to support an additional full scale grocery store. Downtown only has about 2,000 residents and Springfield has decreased in population, due to the large number of single family residences going up, which is a contradiction to its historical pattern of incorporating mixed forms of housing away from 8th & Main Streets.
The bottom line is, dreaming is great, but don’t expect to see much, outside of Quality Foods, Winn-Dixie and Main Branch LLC’s project. Springfield and downtown’s demographics aren’t there yet and won’t be anytime soon. If we want these additional/cleaner stores we’ll have to support what’s already there, as well as make a stronger effort to increase the overall population and density of both neighborhoods.
