Earlier in my post What is the best restaurant in Springfield? I mentioned I hadn’t been to A-Z Sandwiches. The Main Street Bakery was always a close walk so I never bothered to venture the additional two blocks to A-Z. Not to mention it looks pretty intimidating from outside. Burglar bars, the whole nine.
Yesterday I finally decided to go. I figured Hey, if my grandma will go in there, I shouldn’t have a problem
. Well to my surprise it was actually really nice inside. Spacious, clean and friendly people at the counter. Damn, I wish I hadn’t waited to long to stop by! They have breakfast in a sack I’m telling you! I can’t believe I have been missing out on breakfast in a sack.
So if you have been scared to go to A-Z because it looks like a crack den from the outside, be scared no longer. Make your way over there and order a roast beef rider. Just don’t wait too long to eat it after you order. The oil and vinegar will make the pita soggy.

I’m real particular about sandwiches, coming from SF. The owner of A-Z mentioned that’s where he learned how to make sandwicheds in San Francisco after he was stationed overseas.
A-Z has great riders - also Carl’s has great lunch platters, the only thing I’d prefer is if the AC was more consistent at Carl’s.
A-Z is not that scary looking - I would think the kitchens at chicken places at the 8th and Main intersections would be.
