Where is the closest coffee shop in Springfield?
07/21/06 • Posted in: Downtown Jacksonville, Springfield by Joey Marchy 13 Comments »I was asked 16 questions about my neighborhood for Folio’s Annual Manual edition. Until the magazine drops on Tuesday I will list a question, with my answer, each day.
Where is the closest coffee shop in Springfield?
I think the actual question was where is the closest place to get a cup of coffee. In my mind I modified the question to be where is the closest place to get a decent cup of coffee.
18 Blocks from 7th Street, the closest coffee shop would be Starbucks at the Landing.
I don’t think there will be too much debate about this answer. At one time I would have said Main Street Bakery, but they have been closed for months now. I guess I could go to A-Z Sandwiches and get coffee (and I probably will now). There is also a place to get coffee in the Bank of America lobby, but who wants to drink coffee at a bank?
There are probably 10 downtown diners in between my spot and the Landing, but do any of them really qualify as a coffee shop? This begs a larger question, why is there no coffee shop in Springfield? We could surely support an Uncommon Grounds…or maybe not. You tell me.
All I know is when a coffee shop does open in Springfield I will be sitting my butt in there all the time. Sucking up free wi-fi and the yummy black stuff.

One obstacle I could think of would be bums trying to basically use places as day shelters, especially in the winter. Is this even that much of an issue anymore? I just think back to going to Hardees on E 8th and having a constant crew that just hung out in there on cold days, I was never sure where the law settled on that issue.
Wasn’t there a kinda-coffee shop type deal going on at 9th/Main, back when it was Henrietta’s? How did that go? The hardcore may scoff but I’d certainly frequent a local Starbucks, I’m much more of the foo-foo cold/frozen drink variety than traditional drinks. If someone else can make me a cup of coffee that’s big, frozen and full of sugar, I’ll support them too.
I would definitely hang out at a coffee shop (if one existed in Springfield). It would give me a reason to ride my bike around and avoid stripping paint…
I doubt bums would hang around (veteran locals, correct me if I’m wrong). If they ain’t buying overpriced coffee (not likely), then they have no business hanging around.
I thought Starbucks was going to be at the 8th & Pearl location. Of course, that would mean that they would actually have to begin construction. That’s something a story should be done on. We get told the place will break ground every other month, those months come and go…The building should be built and open right now according to our original info…
what happened to Boomtown?
If you are referring to Jungle Runners which used to be in the Boomtown space, read this post: Jungle Runners leaving Downtown Jacksonville after 2 months
I might make the trip up to Springfield for a decent cup of coffee in a nice environment.
It would be EXTRA NICE if they had sidewalk seating for us *hangs head and averts eyes* smokers :-)
I was the original barrister at the Expresso Cafe, the coffee place that opened in the “annex” of HENRIETTA’S at 9th & Main. That is until I was fired for …working to many hours.
The concept was good, the plan was incomplete, the knowledge of the “hospitality industry” was absent in practice…do I sound knowledgeable?
20+ years of Hospitality starting with my mother in the Shady Rest Cafe in the 60’s will do that to you, especially after a few stints at Walt Disney World and a couple of Marriott hotels in Orlando, FL…Did I mention the Clarion Plaza owned by pioneer Harris Rosen?
keep eating good food and aknowledging good service…Kimberly

Three layers coffee shop is opening up on March 17th.
I talked to the owner and toured the building and while it looks a bit fancy for my taste and the espresso machine is entirely automated (not a good thing) but it looks like they’re wanting to do it right and they are making all their deserts in house. Check it out.
Stopped in 5 Points Riverside and found a small coffee shop where I enjoyed a delightful freshly brewed espresso with 2 oz pf homemade placed on top; thus Scribes Cafe coffee Al a mode; delicious!!!!
