Gulletts Grocery

Gullett’s at Walnut and First in Springfield

The Gullett’s grocery building on Walnut and 1st street in Springfield, pictured above, was under consideration to be demolished soon. A few weeks ago Daniel Blanchard saw city official Bob Crawford and when asked about the demolition sign on the Gullets grocery building Bob said:

…its amazing the building is still standing, there are not structural supports left, and the roof and second floor are sitting on the first floor. In short, the city feels its a safety issue at the point.

But now it seems that the building can be saved. Someone had a structural engineer look at it, and apparently it’s not as much of a safety hazard as the city once thought. It’s a lovely historic building and I would have been sad to see it go.

Tony J tipped me to this on the SPAR message board. She has this to say:

… I’ve been in the building a couple of times, when the arts group was trying to fix it up, and again when we talked to the owners about it. And, yes, it is in bad shape, but the “bones”, as Shirley calls them, are sound. Like I said before, the place is a fortress, and the back lot itself could be gorgeous. My favorite part was the iron work on the second floor balcony, always reminded me of the second floors in New Orleans. Also, the ivy on the side facing us is great. Guess beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder.

Anyone have additional information on Gulletts grocery?
