Maybe our Council person can help. Check out this note from today’s daily record:

City Council member Lynette Self is asking for $425,000 to build a skate park at Ed Austin Park in Arlington. The funds will come from a Dist. 2 bond ($300,000) and Dist. 2 park funds ($125,000).

We're still going ahead with this. Look at the Skateplaza of Springfield forum at sparcouncil.org for more info. We're also asking for input from other skaters as that is what we are most lacking in right now. Oh, and if anyone is especially good at fund raising, we could use some assistance there, too.

Yes! I strongly support the decision for a skatepark! I have been skating myself for about 8 years now and I think it would be a great benefit for everyone, even those who do not skate themselves. It can be a great, positive alternative for kids to turn to. Also, it keeps us skaters off of the propety of businesses not intended for skating. Please! It’s a spendid idea!

The only thing I would add is to also include the kids in the design process.

Yesterday we got kicked off the tennis courts on 5th St by the self-proclaimed “Tennis Court Superintendent,” a tall sweaty man with no shirt, sagging jeans, and a pirate bandana…so my tone of incredibility was quite apparent when I responded, “You?!?” Our group consisted of (1) 41-year old on a longboard, (1) 5-year old learning on a mini, and (1) mom of the 5-year old sitting in the shade, so I can imagine we were rather threatening.

He lives near the area and my parting comment was, “so I can count on you to support the new skatepark, correct?”
