I will say it again, and always keep saying it: THERE IS NOTHING COOL ABOUT THE ST. JOHNS TOWN CENTER! It is the epitomy of lame; I know another Gap, Target, and Banna Republic is cooler than trees, but…wait no they aren’t. I guess as a lifelong resident, I hate seeing the once green vastness around JTB turning into yet another bland “our-whole-purpose-in-life-is-to-work-and-consume” shopping area that could just as easily pass for any other city in America (i.e. it is totally devoid of character and culture). Lame. Lame. Lame.
BUT, any recognition for this here fine blog is a good thing ;)

I don’t mind St Johns Town Center because I never go to St Johns County. My gosh…that would mean traveling across the river?!? PAST SAN MARCO?!? I can’t even remember the last time I made it all the way to Mandarin. You might as well tell me that St Johns Town Center is located in Wyoming.

I like Regency because it is a concentration of all the big box stores in one location, and keeps it away from my area of town. And when I purchase clothes every three years I make the trek to [shudder] the malls.

Kind of like why the town dump is in one location.

Seriously Fawn, I think that the perfect place for what you are looking for would be Waitsfield, VT. Extremely small town nestled between two mountains, annual town festival, no big box stores, babbling brook behind your house. Colder than shit in the winter…but that is what the wood stove is for.

What exactly is your vision of the “Perfect Jacksonville?”…stores and whatnot…

Just went to the St Johns Town Center website, to see what all the intense anger was about. Isn’t there suppose to be a gigantic beer/wine/booze store in there? A nirvanistic orgy of imported beers?

Gotta tell you…next time all my boxers get holes and I need something besides Target-wear, gonna head to St Johns Town Center, just to get clothes shopping all done and out of the way in one trip.

Because I sure don’t want to spend a whole week going from one minimalistic Cool Shop to the next, trying to find something to wear to work, paying the Extra Hip Clothes prices.

Not sure why Starbucks was listed under “Specialty Foods” though. Isn’t it just coffee?

Actually, the St. Johns Town Center isn’t in St. Johns County – it’s off St. Johns Bluff (I made this same mistake myself when it was being built). It’s very much in Duval County.

Second of all, I would hope that Springfieldites are making full use of the new River City Marketplace on Airport Road. Not a lot of stores available yet – but a few (Old Navy, Ross, PetSmart, Office Max, Lowe’s, Michael’s, Hair Cuttery, some kind of dollar store, Cracker Barrel, Chili’s, and, of course, a gigantuous Wal-Mart). The new theater just opened as well (Hollywood Theaters – 14 screens – nice place).

When all is said and done, there are supposed to be about 60 stores there. They are also free-standing buildings like the buildings at the Town Center. I like that because you can park in front of the store you need and you don’t have to walk through an entire mall just to visit one store. Saves time.

Anyway, just wanted to remind you it was there….

When it comes to the St Johns Town Center…don’t hate, appreciate. And there is a great liquor store near the SJTC not in it. It is next door by Publix. They have Flying Dog Ale. Yeah!

Totally forgot about the River City Marketplace. Thanks for reminding us.

My take on big box stores is this…they are a necessary evil in order to avoid having to shear sheep, twist the wool into thread, and sew my own clothes after a morning of hunting breakfast rabbit in the fields. I am all about trees, but when those trees are all anemic pines lined up in ruler straight rows and owned by St Joe, it’s just a different definition of “fake.”

My tolerance ends at the point where development and big box stores overtake established neighborhoods, or are built with total disregard to existing infrastructure.

Yes Phil, its Total Wine, its at the St. Johns Town Center area next to Publix. It’s the best liquor store in Jacksonville. Aisles of Beer, wine & liquor and almost as big as the publix. It’s like the mecca of alcohol. I wouldn’t smoke in that place, it’s a nuclear bomb waiting to happen.

Yes, Joey’s Mom is very cool. My mom would have made me write the word over lots more. And would have made me research the Latin origins.

Total Wine. Thanks. And now that it is in Duval County, which just makes it FEEL closer, I will have to make a pilgrimage.
