The Urban Core! Three cheers for Tony! The Folio’s best of edition dropped yesterday and the readers picked Tony Allegretti’s blog The Urban Core as the best blog in Jacksonville. I actually thought I was a lock for this honor, but the world is full of surprises. I will scan an post the blurb about Tony’s blog later.

Note to anyone running for office: don’t take the week off before the election if you want to win. Ha!

It’s cool, Tony deserves all the accolades. If not for his blog, for all the things he has done for downtown. First Wednesday Art Walk, Take Me to the River, Northbank Farmers Market, Burrito Gallery and soon the remodeling of the old Haydon Burns main branch library. Of course Tony didn’t do all these things himself. He had lots of help from others, but he was instrumental in each.

Tony listed his top 10 blogs in Jacksonville. Guess who is number one? Me! So if the best blogger in the city thinks I am number one, what does that make me?

Tony’s Top 10 Reasons to read Urban Jacksonville:

10. You work downtown
9. You play downtown
8. You like pics of hot young metrosexuals (sorry, yo, but there is a demand, and he does it like once a week, tip to TSI)
7. You could care less about when Cheesecake Factory will finally legitimize the Landing.
6. You ride a bike.
5. You keep up with urban core policy decisions
4. You like living here despite its redneck drawbacks.
3. You know there are people who live here who are cool but you just haven’t met yet.
2. You like the culture and the fabric of Historic Districts (and San Marco)
1. You like the original town center on the actual St. Johns. No offense, but just because you can see Dress Barn facing DSW from your three bed two bath doesn’t mean you are urban. Related: If you live somewhere where you can’t see your car from one of your own windows, you are!

Go go Urban Jax! Your blog is a daily ritual, like AM coffee and post-work sofa chillin. Although I’m not really one for stars or ranking systems (I require ambiguity like a zombie loves brains), it would be a crime not to recognize the value of Urban Jacksonville as a stellar community resource.

So thanks for running a cool, highly usable site; for promoting dialog about local issues and events; and for speaking your mind about some of the asinine, old-school orthodoxy that infects the power systems within our town. Bravo!

Speaking of voting, there should be some excitement at the Annual SPAR board of directors meetings tonight. We have 8 candidates, and only 4 openings. Yippee for interest in the ‘field!!!

This is the best local blog by far, and I hate to say it, but the whole little blurb about ‘no comments’ was mindless drivel imho.

I am always suspect of “The Best Of” reports because I have seen some Burger Kingesque restaurants included as “THE BEST OF…!!!!” Anytime someone picks TGI Fridays as the best of (not here…Folio’s grown up sister Creative Loafing), you have to wonder.

I like UrbanJax, Paragelicious, Tony’s site, TMHMIR, MCRazor., SuburbanJax, among others… These are the sites I typically cruise over to when on hold, or waiting for my computer’s 1′s and 0′s to catch up. UrbanJax is the first thing I look at in the morning.

As per Tomorrowland, “it is a daily ritual.”
