"Almost every article I read up to that point seemed sketchy and not only the political articles, all of them" The almost is that some of them (very little) were decent stories w/ facts and well thought out writing, but ALL of the political and non politcal stories that weren't made up the majority of what is put into their "publication". I'm quite sure you and everyone else understood that, but if you want to break it down, there it is...

I'm sorry, I guess I just finally grew up past the point of "let's screw the government just because we can and it's cool" crowd. The Folio is like a kid's newspaper. The FTU is for the grown-ups. Folio reminds me of a bunch of kids who get a big kick out of being able to say four-letter words. Oohh! Heehee! Giggle! It's kinda sad, really. If they would act a little more professional, people might actually take them seriously.

My issue with the Folio is that for every article that has been well-thought out, researched, and well-written, there is another one that is flippant and not researched at all...some pretty soft "facts." And my opinion is based on being near, or knowing some people, who were subjects of various articles. So when I start to take the Folio seriously, they screw it up (for me) by running a hack job.

And I agree, maybe my analogy was off...the TU should not be compared to PBS.

And let's not get into a personal flame war by dogging writing styles.

Somewhere in that garbled mess you:
1) assert that the Folio leans left
2) refer to them as "activists," which is a term that YOU brought up -- not anyone else, and,
3) mention two separate articles that you have problems with, yet provide no specific details of. uh, OK. so...you hate homeless people and details?

I think it's good that you are exercising some healthy skepticism -- that seems perfectly reasonable. However, you're justification for your skepticism is weak. Take a deep breath and try again...

How about the BS they spew as facts?? I'm all for opinions on the conservative and liberal fronts, thats what makes America right? But, Folio obviously has a hard on for the Democratic party. As a publication, to state issues as fact when they have plenty of holes (and I haven't even picked it up in months mainly b/c of an issue I read a while back in which I actually put in VERY LITTLE research on the issue and it was COMPLETELY false what they put in print, which they were called on it by all the people that wrote in to their opinions section the following week). If I put in that little of effort, where do they get their information? It was a complete opinion piece that they were sharing as fact as a "well documented news article". Almost every article I read up to that point seemed sketchy and not only the political articles, all of them. So, you can say that they are activists and getting things done, but if you roll w/ false claims and allegations, you are nothing more than a piece of paper that is only good for restaurant reviews and toilet paper for the homeless. By the way, what exactly are they "activists" on? I read an article from them last year in which they supported the homeless and felt they were given a bad break. The guy they wrote the story on, sure he drink & did drugs and recently got out of prison for stealing, but he was a good guy! Yippee, drunks & druggies should be allowed to piss in the street b/c they are deep down good people. So, basically Folio can kiss my ass... and my rant ends here.

So? They also run ads from plastic surgeons, homebuilders and restaurants. Do those ads seem to shape their editorial policy? Didn't think so. So why should you care? If you go to any other big city with a widely circulating weekly, you're going to see 10x more phone sex and escort service ads than you would find in the Folio. Does that make you think less of those cities' publications? The fact is, the TU has a staunchly conservative editorial policy that not only advocates antiquated political positions and "morals," (see the scripture quote of the day) but also provides absolutely no guidance when covering cultural events, local issues, etc.

The fact is, if you're the slightest bit discerning, you'll find something problematic with any newspaper or magazine that you read...as well you should. However, realize that Folio is attempting to stay fresh and relevant by reaching out to new media (bloggers, etc.) as well as by publishing stories about issues that would quickly be overlooked by editors at the TU.

And to directly address your comment, check the classified ads of the TU and you'll find plenty of phone-sex and escort ads. Far form being "overrun" with them, you, Uturn, have plenty of options available to you.

It's just hard to take a "newspaper" seriously that is overrun with "for a good time, call....." ads in the back. Reminds me of those cheesy "True Detective" magazines from the 1960's.

I can't believe you boobs are so down on the Folio. Not that you're even making any kind of insightful criticism --- "pimply-faced teenage boys?" what does that have to do with anything? That rag has had more to do with exposing political and financial corruption in the Greater Jacksonville area than any other news outlet. What is it? Do you think that because it's free it's not worth anything? Is it because of the typeface, the fonts, the willingness to cover smaller news items?

And being "an OK alternative to the TU" is NOT AT ALL comparable to the relationships between major networks and PBS. In fact, the Folio's incessant coverage of the Lloyd Brown affair actually led to that nut getting fired from TU. Essentially, in trying to be "funny," you guys are completely oversimplifying FW's role in our civic affairs.

"ok alternative to the TU" is like saying the endless spew put out by CNN/Fox/MSNBC is an "ok alternative" to PBS/NPR. Aren't we now into the 4th day of "outrage" over Kerry's comment? Does the average person really give a shit? Or are we more concerned about, oh I don't know...the deficit, the environment, college costs, health care costs, and the disconcerting disconnect between cost of living and our wages, (etc, etc)?

I will say that I like Owen's writing so far on Flog...

When I read the Folio, I always picture a bunch of pimply-faced teenage boys working out of the parents basement with a couple of computers and an old printing press. In my imagination, it kinda looks like Fox Mulder's office. And these boys are fantasizing (obsessing) about their still-nonexistent first sexual experience.

I didn't say Flog sucks, just Folio. I will render a verdict on Flog at a later date. For now, my comment is only directed at the free toilet paper held at many restaurants and small stores for the homeless, that has ink printed on it and that ink spells Folio. Not sure if it stinks worse before or after the homeless take it to Laura St in front of La Cena.... ok, bad joke :P
