The Times-Union asked the people of Jacksoville what they thought downtown should look like. As you might expect there was some wack stuff, there was some pretty good stuff too. Check out the feature on Stephen Papke of Fisher Koppenhafer Architects. Below are some of our favorites and here are all the submissions. (All photos courtesy of the Times-Union).

Signature Skyline: Start with the Landing, a wonderful concept, but just too small to live up to its full potential: Our interpretation creates a new and improved, more energized linear entertainment and shopping venue along the riverfront. Multiple vistas remain open to the river from the heart of the downtown business core as dynamic architectural icons begin to fill our business district. The waterfront continues to thrive with boating traffic and builds on its abilities to become a major maritime transit hub for riverboat cruises, water taxis, etc. The Performing Arts Center celebrates its performances with spotlights and laser light shows to be seen from miles away.

For all the changes in our landscape Toney Sleiman has been responsible for – would this surprise anybody? I mean this in a complimentary way.

Ha ha ha! So true.

Missing from the Jacksonville skyline is a civic landmark downtown on the river. We propose a St. Johns River Museum with observation tower, located on the old courthouse/city hall annex site to celebrate the river and the city. Visitors will discover the multifaceted character of the river. Beyond the museum, across the plaza, the observation tower will provide a view of the river and city in all directions. Adjacent on the city hall annex site, vintage naval airplanes will commemorate the military’s role in Jacksonville’s history.
