“Jacksonville Closes Down Street, I Lose Business”
11/07/06 • Posted in: Downtown Jacksonville, Poll by Joey Marchy 17 Comments »This video from downtown Jacksonville business owner, Jerry Moran, comments on the city’s decision to close down two blocks of Laura Street without notifying any merchants in the area. Not only does Jerry shoot video but he also shoots photos of downtown’s homeless. Check out Flog’s post Jerry’s Kids and this photoset of downtown Jacksonville’s homeless.
Jerry works at/owns La Cena. He has been posting videos on YouTube to document what is going on in downtown Jacksonville. This is the 5th video from Jerry, who’s YouTube username is Feederi. The most infamous was of the homeless man taking a dump right on the sidewalk in plain view of anyone walking by.

What was the purpose of the road closure? Who are the blue-shirted people on the corner? And you do know it’s “lose” business - not “loose” business. I don’t think he was untightening his business :)
Ha ha ha, I guess he was not “untightening” his business. Since it was a direct quote, I guess I will leave the spelling as is.
i get what he’s trying to do, but he’s acting like a dick. the whole “why don’t they just get a job” bullshit pisses me off.
adam b said it. again, its a fine line between actually doing something about the admitedly bad business climate created by the homeless and being a compassionate-less dick who doesn’t realize that but for the grace of God there goes he.
The street was shut down for the JMOMA Gala on Saturday night, which I attended. I can’t speak to why the City did not notify Jerry of the blockade, nor to the purpose of the blockade at Adams street. That blockade was no longer there when I arrived 6:30, only the block of Laura directly in front of the Museum and Library was shut down. I can, however, attest to the fact that MULTIPLE attendees of the Gala’s late night party had dinner at La Cena prior to coming to the party (I imagine these were a good number of the reservations to which he refered in the video), so it could probably be safely argued that the Gala contributed more POSITIVELY to Jerry’s business that night than negatively. And although there was the slight inconvenience of having to take a 3 minute detour via Jefferson Street, there were numerous police officers directing traffic, and I’m sure that they were as helpful in directing Jerry’s customers as they were directing us. The blue-shirted people on the corner were valet service employees. I wouldn’t doubt it if some of Jerry’s customers took advantage of their presence as well.
Am I incorrect in assuming that Jerry’s Saturday evening business is not heavily reliant on foot traffic? I was under the impression that La Cena was a destination restaurant - that it has such a great reputation that people go WAY out of their way to have dinner there. So if you’ve made a reservation at La Cena and made the trek downtown, are you seriously going to be THAT upset if you have to park a block away?
According to Jerry and Stephendare, the street closing resulted in a 30% hit in expected revenue that night. Anyway, it appears, the street closing wasn’t a huge deal, the problem was the city failing to notify adjacent business owners of this decision.
Does the city notify -anyone- about street closings? It seems like every time I try to take Water St on a weekend, it’s blocked off for a Landing event.
Thank you, tklb, for answering my questions.
At this late date, I am pleased to report that the COJ now almost always advises local merchants in advance of impending street closures. The announcement is usually made via email from the Office of Special Events, or via a DVI email. It’s a step in the right direction. It is important for citizens to speak up when they see a problem. The City will usually make an effort on way or the other.
That’s because they don’t have to deal with Stephen Dare’s gay ass antics anymore.
Someone needs to stick a pin in that fat ass. Give him a haircut also, goddamn orange cowlicks are so not cool.
I hate you Stephan Dare. You are a poor excuse for a homosexual.
JR- Seriously dude, let it go.
We get it: you dislike SD; your immature and unfortunate rants aren’t winning you any converts.
And, you aren’t even man enough to use your real name*
