Future home of the Springfield Farmers Market
Move over Beaver Street, there’s a new farmers market in town. The Springfield Business Association and SRG Homes & Neighborhoods are organizing a farmers market for Springfield. The market will be located on Main Street at the Frank Darty car lot and is tentatively planned for January 19th. This space was generously provided by SRG, who owns the lot. Here is some information from the email I received yesterday:
We are promoting the upcoming Farmer’s Market sponsored by the Springfield Business Association & SRG. We would like to get it open for the holidays. Booths will be 10×10 – $25/booth for non-members $20 for SBA members. There is some indoor space available for non-food related vendors.
A one time thing?
I called Lynn Wilson a representative from the Springfield Business Association and asked him a few questions. First I asked if this will be a one time thing. Lynn hopes to make the Farmers Market a weekly event, expanding from once a week to multiple times a week if there is interest. At the moment plans are to hold the farmers market once a week on Saturday for a few hours in the morning.
Bring on the food
Lynn is excited about luring food vendors to the Springfield Farmers Market. When we spoke we both agreed having plenty of food vendors would be essential to the success of the market. When I lived in Minneapolis I always looked forward to the farmers market on Saturday and what I could buy to eat. Raw food, cooked food, hot and cold. Any food vendors interested are encouraged to contact Lynn Wilson.
It’s going to be held in a car lot?
Yes, and this is the best part. For one the lot is paved and there’s plenty of room for vendors. The Darty lot on Main Street provides excellent access for trucks and delivery vehicles, there is even alley access. It’s a short distance from I-95 and MLK Boulevard and there’s plenty of parking on Main Street. The Darty lot also has power access and bathrooms.
The Springfield Business Association is currently acquiring the necessary permits and do not expect permitting to be an issue. The SBA hopes to use this as a stepping stone to promote Springfield businesses and the Main Street corridor. They also hope to show the city Springfield is a viable option for retail, especially along Main Street.
