Anomaly 5-Points
12/15/06 • Posted in: Five Points, Interview, Retail, Riverside by Joey Marchy 14 Comments »Anomaly in 5-Points is the second retail stop of our Urban Jacksonville shopping series. Mackenzie talked with the owner Emily Moody and asked her a few questions about Anomaly. I really like Emily’ philosophy on what makes Anomaly unique. Also I am a dork for not posting this before today because they had a huge event last night. Here’s what Emily has to say about local designers and Anomaly’s top selling labels:
Mackenzie: What do you specialize in?
Emily: Anomaly specializes in carrying unique clothing, jewelry, and accessories from smaller, independent companies that no one else in Jacksonville and sometimes Florida carries. We are about 80% women’s clothes, jewelry, and accessories, and 20% men’s jeans, shirts (tees, polos, and dress shirts), jackets, hoodies, and other accessories (wallets, cuffs, hats etc.).
Mackenzie: Do you carry any local designers?
Emily: We carry all kinds of local designers. Garden Variety, Joey Temptation, I do handbags when I have time, as well as children’s wear under the label Wee Chic. We are ALWAYS interested in other local designers, but their follow through isn’t always as professional and so the ones that actually deliver a great quality product are hard to find.
Mackenzie: What makes your store unique?
Emily: Anomaly is unique because we truly sell things that you aren’t going to find anywhere else. We are always seeking out new and cool lines to carry. Also, for a boutique, we are unique in that, quite frankly, we are not a very pricey store, and that is something we consciously try to focus on. Our goal is to keep all items under $100. (and most are under $50!) What’s the point of fashion if only super rich people can afford it?
Also, we always try to make connections with our customers and be friendly and approachable. No one likes stores where you go in and feel like the people who work there are judging you for not being cool enough to shop there or something. Personally, as consumers we don’t want to spend our hard earned money somewhere where we are treated rudely. That is insulting, and we do our best to always make customers happy and excited to be in our store.
Mackenzie: What is your best seller right now?
Emily: Right now we don’t really have one line specifically that sells really well for us, it’s kind of all over the board… But some great sellers include for men: VIGOSS jeans (great denim at a great price… all under $78), Threadless tees and No Star tees. For the ladies: Soundgirl and BB Dakota are reasonably priced lines that don’t compromise quality or style as well as jewelry from By Boe.
Mackenzie: Any events coming up?
Emily: Thursday Dec. 14th we’re having our annual customer appreciation night. We’re doing 20% off your entire purchase, plus you get a special gift from us! That night we are also kicking off our formal wear drive that will go through from now through prom season. We are collecting gently used dresses/shirts/ties/shoes for underprivileged teens across Duval County.
Fashion can occasionally get a little too superficial and we are hoping to remind our customers that just a few miles (even mere blocks) from the store there are people who are struggling just to live. Hopefully this will remind We are especially focusing on donating to The Bridge of Northeast Florida, PACE center for girls, and Jacksonville Urban League. Depending on how many items we can collect we are going to either be inviting the teens out to the store for private shopping nights to come pick out their clothing or we’re just going to donate the items directly to the organizations.
Mackenzie: Anything else you’d like readers to know about Anomaly?
Emily: Please support local businesses! As residents of Springfield and business owners in 5 Points, we do all we can to never shop at chains whether it be clothing, food, restaurants, or whatever. Obviously, some things you have to go to chains for (groceries sorry but Food Plus or whatever on 7th street just doesn’t cut it for us 99% of the time), but supporting local businesses creates culture and a sense of neighborhood.
When we were growing up here, 5 Points was the absolute, drop-dead coolest place in town to us because of places like the Theory Shop, Edge City, and Now Hear This, all small businesses. Also, we love Springfield, and hope to see some of your readers around the neighborhood. If you come into the store, tell us you live in our ‘hood! Also we both have to say that we read Urban Jacksonville everyday and love all the hard work Joey puts into the site!

I assume she is still taking clothes? if so, i’ll be sure to drop off a bunch of stuff.
I love Anomaly. I’ve gotten some great rings, necklaces, and bracelets from there. Wonderful pieces and reasonable prices. You really can’t beat that!
Emily and Adam are cool.
And the fact she donates to The Bridge just makes her even cooler.
.nextdoorneighbor.
that is funny, emily does not like chain stores. just a couple of weeks ago I say her in the mall with a baby gap bag. I guess when you have a kid that your ideals change, I think she is a fake, trendless, money hungry shop owner who tries to preach her ideals, just not practice them
I love the ad hominem attacks… And not surprisingly, by an anonymous poster!
ummmm, he says his name is ratsonville. i suspect its the mayor of orlando.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEY ARE STILL COLLECTING PROM DRESSES? I HAVE LIKE 6 TO GET RID OF!
Chrissy I would try giving them a call. If they aren’t accepting prom dress donations Goodwill and Salvation army are always an option.
Okay, i realize this is an old thread, but I have this to say:
Ratsonville: FUCK YOU. You don’t know my wife, and you are in no place to judge her. She actually makes a lot of clothes, burp cloths, and bibs for our son, but she doesn’t have time to make them all. Show us a small, independent kids clothing store that is affordable, and we will shop there. We support independent businesses whenever possible. GrassRoots instead of Publix whenever we can, Moon Colony (RIP) or Inertia over Best Buy, Burrito Gallery over just about any other place; so, yes, sometimes we have to shop at chains, but only begrudgingly. Calling her money hungry shows you don’t know anything about her. So next time, maybe talk to us and find out about our economic politics before you talk shit, and do so anonymously like the little bitch i’m sure you are.
Oh, and Chrissy, sorry; we are money hungry and old prom dresses aren’t worth anything.
Just kidding, please bring them by anytime.
ratsonville… i apologize for shopping at baby gap and i’m sorry you feel misled by my ideals. i do support as many local, independent stores as possible but with the many financial costs of having a child and helping my husband get through law school, i did pick up a few onesies for our son at baby gap. they were on sale 1/2 off so they really weren’t making that much money off of me. i really love the children’s stores in town, but it’s not financially feasible for me to purchase all my son’s clothing there. i try to shop at duck duck goose and lulu as much as possible, but honestly, i can not afford to have my sons wardrobe full of $50 baby outfits. but, i guess since i’m so money hungry, you would think that i have tons to spend on designer clothes for my son. currently, i am trying to expand our children’s clothing selection so i will have something to dress my son in and offer a more affordable option for dressing children in our community.
i do have to say that your comment really hurt me on a personal level. i pride myself on being a sincere person and i would love for you to introduce yourself to me so we could discuss this matter and my feelings further. we’re having an art show tomorrow night and if you aren’t doing anything, please come, make peace and have a couple of beers on us.
It saddens me that you even feel like you should reply to this drivel.
The reason ratsonville spotted you at baby gap?
Big Sale at Hot Topic!
fuck that coward punk.
I am not in riverside much anymore, but will make it a point to get over to Anomaly and support a principled local bussiness. (unless Adam is in the Federalist Society at law school…then your on your own)
I am willing to bet I have scars older than ratsonville. Earned keeping punk kids like him from getting beat to death by nazis on riverside streets. I wear them with pride while looking over the book collection at Costco.
Dont ever justify you behavior to shiteaters like this.
Haters hate, and little else. fuck em.
You got work to do.
Rick K- please stop by and introduce yourself sometimes….and, no, i am not, never will be, and never have been in the Federalist Society….and thanks for your kind words….
After living in the Riverside area for quite a few years…I was thrilled when Anomaly opened up. Finally a store that was reasonably priced with cute clothes had arrived! Of all the stores in five points and surrouding areas, I chose and still choose to shop at Anomaly. Adam and Emily are always so friendly and helpful, which I can’t say about all the stores around here. She supports local artists and throws art shows for them (no other stores in 5 points do that), helped out with The Bridge, and donates jewlery and gifts to local schools. Emily has never tried to push her ideals on anyone and I think she is a wonderful person, and if you have anything bad to say about her, it shows you don’t know her. Just because she owns a boutique doesn’t mean she only has to shop at independent stores. Honestly…why would anyone care where she shopped? Is it that big of a deal? If you are so concerned about it fashion or whatever it is that upset you so much…what were you doing at the mall?
