I’m heading back to Jacksonville today after a week in Austin Texas for the South by Southwest interactive festival. Check out some SXSW blog posts on the nGen Works blog or some photos from the SXSW photo set. SXSW is also providing audio podcasts and video coverage. They add new panels all the time so your best option would be to subscribe to the SXSW podcast.

On the plane ride home today I’ll be working on my notes for the The Changing Media Landscape: Challenges and Opportunities panel.

This panel will feature me and four other panelist from Jacksonville print and television media: John Burr and TJ Weyer (Times-Union), Mike Buresh (Fox 30), Ken Amaro (First Coast News) and Bruce Hamilton (WJXT). Here are my talking points:

1. One of the challenges bloggers face is credibility. With only a tiny fraction of the fact-checking resources of the major media sometimes bloggers get their facts wrong. (Sometimes we all do!)

One of the advantages of blogs is the ability to make corrections instantly. No waiting until the next day to correct changes.
Changes can be made inline, to the original article, instead of just appearing on a corrections page.
Reliance on crowdsourcing: other bloggers and readers can and will tell you when you have a fact wrong.

2. Blogs can broadcast audio, video and text instantly around the globe for virtually nothing. Blogs aren’t “opinions”, they are a publishing tool. A cheap one at that!

3. News and reporting is becoming more of a conversation than a lecture. Brands who are succeeding create an emotional connection with the consumer. (think Target vs. Walmart) The same thing goes for news organizations, they will need to create an emotional connection with their reader/viewer to be successful.

If you are interested in attending the panel it might be too late. The flyer asks people to RSVP by March 12th, but you may still be able to get in. If I were you I would just wait until I get the panel video/audio online:

Looking at the panelist and the subject, Joey, you are going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting.

I’ve been getting invites for this breakfast for weeks (I was an FPRA member for a time) and it just said media breakfast, which is not enough to get me to click through. No offense to my MSM homies (aka working poor). FPRA would have made at least $45 more if they would have promoted the SUBJECT of the breakfast but I’ve now got a conflicting meeting.

Looking forward to the podcast/video.

By the way, Charles Landry is speaking at the Cultural Council Arts Awards luncheon April 24. I blogged about it. If you have or haven’t ever been to this luncheon, CL is the real deal. Go.

Yes, Mike Buresh is the Chief Meteorologist for FOX30 news. Heavy lifting? Not sure what you mean. I hope this discussion is more about the future of media and not me defending bloggers. I refuse to let the conversation stray that way. After my time at SXSW this week I have some really good insights on where media is going.

Heavy Lifting means you might have to do alot of the work. Thats parlance, Nicky. The big bold type on the pdf says:

PODCASTING. BLOGS. SATELLITE RADIO. YOUTUBE.

And its you up there with Ken Amaro (on your side, thankfully), Bruce Hamilton (who I talked to at Art Walk and seems aware), Mike Buresh (hell of a weatherman but no Richard Nunn), John Burr (Times Onion- please ask him how the Hoodia Diet keeps making it into my news peruse, does he know I’m fat?), TJ Weyer (new media director- probably a good panelist), an image consultant moderator and YOU.

I’ve spoke to this group before about all that was going on downtown and they were seemingly engaged but not many questions. Good peoples though. I’m sure it will be fun. Wish I could go.

I was one of the audience members at this morning’s Changing Media Landscape and I must say Joey was one of the most (if not THE most) interesting and informative speaker(s). Those in attendance were there to gather information about current media (blogs, podcasts, RSS feeds). While I expected TJ from the T-U to share more details, it was Joey who educated us about how to survive and thrive in the 24/7 media world. I don’t believe you would ever find one blogger-basher in the group. And…Tony, keep pressing the media about covering downtown issues. Long live true journalism!
