If you can guess which elevation is shown above Tony says he’ll buy you a burrito. Just kidding, but I will. PS, I have no idea which elevation this is.
What’s the hottest thing in Downtown Jacksonville this week? Sunday brunch at Cafe Nola? JTA adding a skyway station in Brooklyn? Kuhn closing on the Laura Trio?
No, it’s a multilayered cake of new urbanism with a hybrid-urban-grocery filling. That’s how Tony Allegretti and the JBJ described soon-to-be converted Haydon Burns library which will become 122 Ocean. (Thanks to Flog for stealing my headline thunder) Here’s the part of the article that has everyone in the urban core all hot and heavy:
The impending early-April closing on the sale of the Haydon Burns Public Library to Main Branch LLC will mark the beginning of construction on a mixed-use development that will include an “urban market” grocery store.
The grocery, called City Market, will be a 6,000-square-foot store owned, built and run by Gallery Restaurant Group LLC, which also owns the Downtown restaurant Burrito Gallery and of which Allegretti is also a partner. It will be a hybrid space of regular groceries, specialty and organic foods, precooked meals, produce, a deli, seafood and a café. The café will serve specialty meats and cheeses and be menu-based, with seating in and outside the market.
So what are the implications for Springfield and Downtown? So many. One, we won’t have to discuss a Publix for Springfield. Two, no more Winn Dixie and that’s a big one for me. I always hit Winn Dixie for essentials like beer, wine, milk and ice cream. Not any more. For the coming smash of Northbank and Southbank residents it means more dining and shopping options. And don’t forget the lunch crowd who will surely overflow from the Burrito Gallery into the grocery for quick eats. I do have a few questions:
- What about parking for the grocery store? I wonder how that will work, will I have to find a meter to run inside for bananas?
- Will weekend hours be normal or limited. Is there a proposed schedule?
- 6K sq/ft. Does anyone have a sense of how big that is?
- Will Tony and team survey the community prior to stocking the store to see what people need?
Survey responses may be wide and varied, but I think it could be valuable when planning the store. Of course I would be willing to help craft and set up the survey if they are interested. Please feel free to add your own questions below.
Here is the story referenced in the post above: Downtown project includes grocery
