I have been taking all of our computers parts, monitors, and any other electronic device over there for a couple of years.

They have a charge/pay list where you can actually get paid for certain items. We worked out a deal where we don’t get any money for anything, but we also don’t have to pay for anything.

Anything salvageable is reused and/or sent to other parts of the world for reuse, or if not salvageable, it is sent to be melted down. According to their website, they are EPA approved.

Fuck way. I hate throwing away all that BS junk mail. Also, fittinly enough, I just discovered this site last night: greendimes.com; for $36/year you can eliminate junk mail, plant trees, and save paper.

if you have an old computer, how do you dispose of it without worrying about security stuff? my old computer doesn’t run any more (something about the video card or something), but there is still stuff on the hard drive.

Rip the hard drive out, and take a hammer to it. Seriously…

MIT did a study of used hard drives. “Scavenging through the data inadvertently left on 158 used disk drives, the students at the Laboratory for Computer Science found more than 5,000 credit card numbers, detailed personal and corporate financial records, numerous medical records, gigabytes of personal e-mail and pornography.”

The ONLY way to guarantee your data wont be mined is to physically destroy the hard drive. You can take it apart and drill holes in the platter, take a sledge hammer, or simply use a press drill and punch several holes in the entire drive. You can write 1′s and 0′s, but even that isn’t guaranteed unless you do it multiple times.

When I drop off old CPUs at Jacks, I always tell them “Sorry, no Hard Drive, company policy”. Drives are cheap and easy to get new, don’t risk letting your data get in the wrong hands.

I’ve also noticed a new “scrap metal” yard behind the burned out warehouse (finally tearng down) just East of Ionia across the RR tracks on Eight St. Watch you copper boys & girls.

Fawn – you can have some fun with junk mail, a beer, and some duct tape.

Take the selfaddressedstampedenvelope, rip up the junk mail and stuff it back inside their envelope, add a few more things into the envelope (scrap metal, dead manatees, etc), then seal the envelope with duct tape and send it back to them.

It’s not so much the annoyance of the junk mail, but the fact that it pisses me off that a tree had to die so some douche could send me yet another credit card offer to throw away.

Sunn Battery, located at 1316 West Adams St does recycle batteries.

They don’t charge a recycle fee for anything except wet cell nickel-cadmium batteries, or radio batteries IF you have more than a handful of them.
