Urban Jacksonville

Thanks to Tony Allegretti for pointing out the continued discussion over the state of the arts in Jacksonville. Tony references Mark Creegan’s comments so I’ll start you out there too. Thanks for the shout out Mark and “Art it up” everyone. It’s the hottest thing.

The Silverleaf condos on Silver Street in Springfield have passed inspection and are ready for people to buy them. You can try to check out some pictures of it on the SPAR forum, but the pictures in the post are bull-doggie. Here’s some more info:

Located at the corner of 11th and Silver the 2 story units offer over 1400sq. ft. of live/work space. All the units have 2bed/2.5 baths with stained concrete floors, exposed brick walls, granite tops and stainless appliances. Some of the units feature city views and hardwood floors upstairs. Rampant - a tea cup poodle holding a 12-inch blade with severed testicles impaled upon the point would send shivers down my spine.

You could do whatever with the concept...doesn't really require a rendering of an actual dog. 3D lettering with teeth would look cool. Go down the alley between Laura and Silver/5th & 6th and look for the hunter green fence and let me know what you think...You'll know you have arrived when you start to trip over condoms and dirty diapers.

Sure wish I had known about the whole throw-the-diaper-out-the-window concept. Would have saved me some money on that Diaper Genie.

Might have to brush up on my Dog painting skills. Cant have a "Beware of Dogs" with out a evil mean looking dog. A tea cup poodle just wont cut it...lol

Phil, Hell yeah, a beware of dogs sign would be awesome, especially if it stretched to our side, too. Then someone would read that just as Steve almost clears that 9 foot fence. People would think we had some crazy/killer dogs back there.

The run off does have to be controlled or it can get out of hand (behind 5pts, as per example).

I would love to find another legal spot to paint, especially since getting into more of the more modern 3d lettering (Neck,Daim) styles. Unfortunately not knowing many building owners much less suitable buildings has left me in retirement with the rare canvas.

Even though I never painted at your building, thank you for hosting the artform.

nice. my partner paul and I hosted a legal wall on 10th st between liberty and walnut that had some unbelievable work. i will have to search for pics. we'd come back and it would be different, sometimes bi-weekly. but then they started to paint the bricks and slowly started to really get sloppy and not worth it. then paul sold the building. the end.

Its in a record jacket somewhere, I will find it, it was a zine by zies and the rules (it might have been comandments or something else) were definitely cut from another source. And I'm probably paraphrasing and might even have thrown in a rule that I really want, but I'll find it and set the record straight. I know how to get in touch with the guy who made it anyway. I will post it.

I have some retired throwie friends as well though I never dabbled, save the trestle
where I grew up.

I like the above stencils, and I even appreciated Euler's theory (another BG job), but it seems like that if its going to take no time or though or art or meaning, except for destruction for the sake of a brand it should be regulated to neglected property. MO

No monetary loss actually until I fix it which I have yet to do.

Actually those "basic laws of graffiti" are dependent on whos writing them. Personally I would agree with those you stated but have never heard those in particular and I subscribe to several zines and have been a graffiti artist since 93 (currently not active in scene). However, there is more than one school of thought in the graffiti community.

Sorry to hear about your monatery loss.

Thanks for pointing out our artist in residence, Fury. You could imagine our excitement when we first discovered his masterpiece on our stainless fence (try making a big ass access fence downtown look decent, it aint cheap or easy). Fury also blessed us with a similar masterpiece in the mens bathroom on the dining room side. Its behind the door. Fury, you sneaky boy! Anyway my partners and I have a check for Fury (we wouldn't take art without paying) so if you know him, anyone, please let him know we'd like to meet him and thank him for his work which must have took all of ten seconds yet gives us a lifetime of enjoyment and color. Blue color. With flair. And the year it was created.

I bought a t-shirt from OXY one time that came with a zine that had the basic laws of graffiti. One of them was not to tag a renovated building (especially brick). Another was not to tag a historic building. Another was not to tag where art and culture were celebrated. I'll try to find it but I think there is a small crowd that hasn't read up on the kulture. It seems like there are a lot of qualified, high profile structures to bomb (tag, mom) in the city.

Anyway, thanks for pointing it out.

Tony- What about Fury? I guess he just skipped the whole process since he only had enough to fill the one part of your outside steel loading doors?

Seriously, the only thing worse than having your business get tagged, is if the tagging is TOTALLY LAME. That has to be the stupidest, weakest graffiti ever.

OOH ooh. Let me take this opportunity to tell you the process of showing work at the Burrito Gallery. Thanks PC!

1. You have to have a lot of work (more than you think). Enough to fill the entire dining rooms (east and west- the bar is work from our permanent collection and those crazy fish). You can do a group show like the sewing machine group or byron's last show but it has to have some meaning, like sewing or people who used to live in Brooklyn or something.
2. We book about a year out. You must be patient.
3. You must stay in constant communication and/or be reachable at all times. If we lose contact you lose your place in line.
4. You must install your own work on the night of art walk after we close or early the next morning (this is probably the hardest part of the deal - the morning after an art walk...).
5. We take 20% (cheap!)
6. You get 3 art walks, so you get a month before your first art walk and then after your third one you take it down.
7. We need a consensus of the owners to approve your work.
8. We don't host any openings or do any marketing (besides the obvious art walk stuff and menu shout out) for you, you have to handle that.

I like it all. The museum stuff, the restaurant hangings, and the street stuff...Monet and Thurston alike.

I don't know what the big yank is about artists not getting into MOCA. There are plenty of areas to display and sell.

Sure, your painting on Burrito Gallery's wall may not have the cachet you are looking for...but I will see it and appreciate it a lot faster than trying to get to MOCA within their regular hours of operation.

I don't know what it is: how well done they are, the sneaky, yet completely out in the open location, or just the total randomness of them, but i love them.

Anyone know who did the completely fucking rad little stencils of Hendrix, Ghandi, and the famous Vientamese head shooter on the sidewalk ledge by MOSH if you exit at MOSH from the Main St. Bridge? If you haven't seen them, they are so killer.

Thats arts to me. F the museum. To me, it's WAY overpriced for a couple of floors of not much. Cool building and I'm glad it's there, but it's not for me. Those stencils, and similar ones like the Bill Murray on the trash can near Bay/Ocean intersection, and Sean Thurston's rad graffiti everywhere are cool Jax art for me. I couldn't care less about Moca-J, Jmoma, or JoMomma's moca milk or whatever.
