Art show impressions: Digital to Physical, Humane Society Benefit, Lloyd Apartments

I need to get this out of my system. I’m pissed off at Jacksonville for not coming to the Digital to Physical show. This was a national show with art from all over the country and thankfully only one of the artists, Dan May, was there. If the other had artists been at the show it would have been embarassing. I didn’t get to the show until 8pm, so there may have been more people trickling through, but I counted no less than 20 people at the show.
The show was great in every way except one, attendance. I know it was a holiday weekend and there were two big shows the night before. Maybe everyone “arted it up” and was arted out on Saturday night. Thanks to Byron King for organizing the show, he did a great job. Thanks to Brittni Wood who helped Byron. Thanks to Tony Allegretti who provided the gallery space, which by the way is a great place if you are planning a show.
If you missed the show there are two ways to catch it. Bryon King plans to be at the gallery during the following times: Saturdays from 12-5, and by appointment after 4 on the weekdays. The best way to reach Byron is by emailing him at byronking@gmail.com. You can also catch every piece in my massive Digital to Physical photoset which has almost every piece of art from the show.

I love Brittni and everything she’s doing. This show was another example of her dedication to making the Jacksonville art scene better. The show was bangin’ except for the heat. Damn Opaq! How ’bout some window units!? Cheap art. $1 cupcakes and plenty of folks to chat with. They raised over $1,200 just from people buying artwork and cupcakes! More pics from the show here. And here too.

If you missed this show you might have missed the best show of the weekend. Or the most surprising at least. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I showed up at the Lloyd Apartments at 9th and Laura in Springfield. I thought it would be a bunch of kids showing art in a thrown together show. I expected a degree of professionalism, but I was blown away when I got to the show. The house, apartment, galley, whatever was immaculate. Clean, built in bookshelves, wood floors, high ceilings, nice trim etc. The art was awesome too. Unfortunately I didn’t get many pictures and I didn’t do any interviews.
I had every intention of chatting people up, taking pictures, doing interviews, you know, the works. When I got there, everything changed. I was all intimidated. This was a totally different crowd than I am used to operating with. My camera was out of memory, my iPod battery was dead and I was a little off my game. I didn’t even remember to hand out the “Send Me Art” cards from Sean Tucker (more on that later this week). It would have been a great conversation starter. Next time.

I’m guessing this isn’t the case since you only mentioned attendance being a problem at the Digital to Physical show, but school just got out (at least at UNF) - that may have had an impact. Either way, thanks for putting up the photos. Looks like I missed out
i was at both shows; the lloyd show was great, the neatest people. byrons show was great i had the greatest pleasure of meeting dan and his wife, we had a great conversation! the turnout was a bummer, i actually saw joey, was that tony that arrived with him?
i had to go to work at 5am on weekends, but ill be a regular at the shows, byron will testify, i went to his show at 1951 market, and this one.
umm, i felt the rap music was inappropiate for the shows, just too loud. i had to converse with dan, the featured artist, outside. it would have been better to talk while inside at the show.
damn sorry i didnt get to meet joey and tony— but next time guys
Don’t be bummed Joey, it was encouraging for a first show. Plus, there were thousands of people there before you got there. Byron curated a really strong show and we had real people let us know that they loved this kind of show.
Some artists sold work too so that too was positive. There will be a ton a photos floating around from this show but I encourage all who care to see this art from around the country to meet Byron on a Saturday and see it. I think most will be up for a month. There is beer left.
George, sorry I didn’t get to meet you. I heard you were there and I was looking around for you…
I agree, Joey. I expected a much better turnout, especially since the events on Friday night were so well attended. A lot of people I talked to on Sunday about the 9th and Liberty show, didn’t know anything about it, so I guess I should have made more of an effort to get the word out. But anyway, it was wonderful to see great quality work at kind of a sqatter’s art space. Artists, don’t despair! Polly and I really loved the work and we certainly appreciated the work by Byron and Tony and everybody else involved in mounting this show.
Hey, did you say there was still beer left?

Stop by Saturday from 12-5 if you didn’t get to the opening.
Thanks Tony and Paul for use of the space. Also, thanks Ian and peeps for supplying the tunes.
i was pretty upset that i wasn’t able to go. my best friend is moving to africa, and we had to have her party saturday night. stupid africa.
first of all i’d like to thank byron and tony for putting together/hosting an awesome show… and for asking me to be a part of things. great jobs guys! i too was a bit disappointed with the overall turnout, however it was very nice to meet the folks who did show up. i’d like to echo tony’s comment… i think it’s encouraging for a first show in a new space and i hope tony, byron, and all others involved continue to put on quality events such as this one! maybe next time two thousand people will show up ;~)
dana & joey thanks for all the great pics…
thanks for all the posts about the show joey!
I had a blast!!!! ROYAL TREATMENT DJ CREW all day, baby!!!!
Yeah Triclops! You and Prince Rainier were awesome. I wish I had skillz like that…
I went to all of the shows, and they were all great. Thanks so much everyone who put those on. The 9th and Liberty show was the best one I’ve been to in Jacksonville - really engaging images that flowed together exceptionally well. Great space, great people. Anyone who missed it: it is absolutely worth your while to make an effort to get out there 12-5 on another Saturday in May.
