Downtown Jacksonville had church this weekend and it wasn’t on Sunday morning.
The Jacksonville Film Festival’s screening of Chops at the Florida Theatre last night provided a near-religious experience for all those in attendance.
Chops, a documentary on Douglas Anderson School of the Arts jazz band’s successful journey to compete in the Essentially Ellington Festival at Lincoln Center, gave audience members a smile that lasted out the door.
Jacksonville native Marcus Printup, trumpeter for Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and University of North Florida alumnus, introduced the film and encouraged the audience to have a tissue in hand; Printup’s warning was not in vain.
The film compelled a satisfying range of emotions for children, parents, film-lovers and VIP’s. At any given time the audience was laughing, sniffling, clapping or rocking to the soulful jazz music that so perfectly accompanied the documentary.
Quotes by notable jazz musicians were dispersed throughout the film, providing a steadfast reminder that Chops is about celebrating life and love, especially the love of music.
The theatre was packed with an eager and pleasant audience, most of whom were related to the students featured in the film. During the quiet parts of the movie one heard whispers of “I remember that,” and laughs when particular DASOTA teachers were featured.
At the conclusion of the film, Chops Director Bruce Broder received a standing ovation as he took the stage to give thanks to the students, his family and son.
As Broder left the stage, the curtains opened to reveal seven members of the DASOTA jazz band who were featured in the film, along with Marcus Printup. The audience stood and applauded the musicians and then enjoyed a brief closing performance.

Exiting the theatre, one could not help but feel reenergized and encouraged.
As I left, I recalled a statement made earlier in the night, which at the film’s conclusion made perfect sense; North Florida and South Georgia have an understanding of soul unlike any other place.
Chops, particularly the students featured, reminded Jacksonville of that innate understanding last night.
