John, from the Homeless Family’s Blog

Topics of discussion: Jerry Moran the vigilante, homeless camps on Beaver Street, how Jacksonville seems like Dallas 10 years ago, Metro Jacksonville’s plans for forum domination, the slow demise of other local forums. What am I leaving out?

The homeless camp on Beaver Street was by far the most intriguing discussion, in my opinion, of the night. Basically the idea is to create a centralized location on the outside of downtown for homeless people to camp. The camp would need to have running water, police presence, latrines and transit access to downtown services via the trolley.

John, from the Homeless Family’s Blog, seemed to think this could be a solution to the city-wide homeless problem. And don’t get it twisted when I say city-wide and not just downtown. Homelessness is a city-wide problem with camps springing up in Arlington, the Westside and just about any other place in Jacksonville that has become slightly neglected.

It seems like a radical idea, but I think we’ve exhausted all of our less radical ideas to solve the homelessness problem. Maybe it’s time for a new point of view.
