The Color of Munny
06/26/07 • Posted in: Art, Downtown Jacksonville, Events by Joey Marchy 7 Comments »Update: This show was so popular it has been held over for the August Art Walk on 8/1/07.
The Color of Munny is the first vinyl toy art show Jacksonville has ever seen (to the best of my knowledge). I’ve been wanting to organize and art show like this for quite some time. It hasn’t been easy though, some day I’ll tell you about it.
I’ve invited over 25 artists to paint, modify and deconstruct this:
A Munny is an 8 inch tall toy made from a soft vinyl and comes in three colors: white, black and glow. Here’s a list of the artists you’ll see at the show:
Shaun Thurston, Brittni Wood, Varick Rosette, Ty Williams, Bryan Register, Dan May, Marisa Carta, Ian Chase, Clay Doran, Tonya Lee, Mark Creegan, Russel Quadros, Chad Landenberger, Patrick Carter, Jerry Lambert, Kendrick Kidd, ESKEE, Levi Ratliff, John Arvin, Travis Schmeisser, Nacim Tehrani, Barrett Fiser, Jimmy Pines, Chance Isbell, Nick Wagner, Brad Silverstein, Damon Williams, Jessi Bruton, Karen Kurycki

SWEEEEEET!
oh man, joey. that is so freaking cool. i’ll be there with bells on.
this looks great Joey. It’s a lot of work isn’t it?
Just wondering why a Vinyl Toy art show? You said you’ve been wanting to do it for a long time, why?
I’m sort of out of the loop on the whole vinyl toy craze.
Where did it come from?
Man I feel old. thanks.
you shouldn’t feel old. personally, i don’t collect these toys, but i think most of the people collecting these toys are just like me, 20-30 year old guys that grew up collecting action figures and comic books. they have an ingrained aesthetic appreciation for the well-designed and well-packaged collectible, however unpractical or purposeless. even back then, i remember seeing pictures sent in to the comic trade magazines of home-made or customized action figures. now that those same kids are grown and have decent jobs, they need something to display on their ikea shelving, and japanese designed kubrick bears are an upgrade from g.i.joes.
that said, i’m looking forward to this show.
word to The Royal Treatment.
Cool. thanks for the info.
Makes sense.
I really didn’t know this phenomenon existed.
My cool points are dropping quickly if anyone is keeping track.
I wonder what will one day be the reaction to the Munny phenemonon. Little painted Toy dolls of a starving baby in Darfur?

Looks like a fun show though. I’ll definitely be there.
cheers Joey.
I was actually wondering if any of the Munny’s were still for sale. Saw the show last night at art walk, but it was too crowded to find out.
Jackson,
Yes some of the Munnys are for sale. Let me know which one(s) you are interested in and I can tell you if they are for sale and for how much.
