J. Nicks - went to your website. I'll be the first one to admit the building looks like crap. An embarrassment really...

Funny how when you are driving by in the morning you tend to not see that. We're having a work day on Saturday and I plan to pass your pics out to everyone working.

Thanks for pointing that out...

And if you're not doing anything that day, stop on by and lend a hand. You've obviously got some painting skills.

One side is pissed off because we don't throw ourselves in front of bulldozers and chain ourselves to the one remaining piece of wood that is not rotted.

The other side is pissed off because we try to help people with the City of Jacksonville's HPC-mandated historic overlay.

I think if you renovate your house, or try to maintain your house on a budget, using some common sense...you'll be just fine.

I moved to Springfield knowing that I had to comply with some guidelines. It sure beats gated communities where motorcycles are banned and each blade of grass must be hand washed.

If I wanted to put up T-111 siding or tar-paper the side of my garage, I guess I would move to a 3-acre place in Keystone Heights.

Yeah, not all of us are here in this grand utopian paradise by choice. My family's been here long before it was anything historic and while I still consider it better than most neighborhoods in town, it's just the place where I'm stuck. I'm here simply because it's the cheapest option for me right now.

I fixed up the house because it suited me, I don't give two shits about guidelines. All 30-some-odd of my window casings are about as metal as church burnings in Norway. It's what works best at what I could afford. I try to keep it looking nice but beyond that, it's just a house not a monument to some bygone era that some folks try a little too hard to hang onto.

Don:
Yes, god forbid someone wants to live somewhere AFFORDABLE and doesn't want to follow guidelines and other restrictions when working on ONE'S OWN PRIVATELY OWNED PROPERTY.

did you ever pause to think that maybe someone is not speculating and merely trying to live somewhere affordable?

I mean, i rent, so it doesn't mean two shits to me, but telling someone else how to use his own private property strikes me as bullshit, and i'm not even a libertarian.

Yes god forbid you live in a Historic District and actually be expected to follow Historic Guidelines. If you don't want to be held accountable then don't speculate in a federally designated historic district.

And by god, if you do anything at all, MAKE SURE YOUR FUCKING WINDOWS ARE HISTORICALLY ACCURATE! The SPAR cabal has to sacrifice so many infants to their elder gods because of you schmucks installing modern window fixtures. How on earth do you expect the spirits of the damned to enter your house if you've metal settings?

Mr. Nicks, all I can say is be careful. You'll wake up one night and there will be several golf carts in your yard. After that? Nothing.

OOOOOHH!! What is that supposed to be some kind of threat or something?? Nice signs you put up, you try to make the neighborhood look bad and all you succeeded to do was make yourself look like a greedy asshole!!! I live right around the corner from your 2 pieces of shit houses. Maybe if you did any kind of real rehab to them they would've sold. I have friends that live near those houses and they told me a while ago that you half-assed the rehab of at least the blue one on 5th.. Covering up the shitty work with a coat of paint doesn't make the problems go away. Just cause the paint looks new doesn't mean people are going to jump up to buy it.. I actually considered the blue one when you had it listed for $45k, for my mother. That's when my friends told me about the shoddy work that was done. Now I wouldn't give you $45.00 for it.. I hope you lose your shirt now, you deserve it!!
