Sunday night marked Jacksonville’s second Sunday Sixer, a Riverside/Downtown bike race that includes six stops and six beers (or grape soda if you prefer.)
The race commenced at Baker Point Park and ended at a house on Walnut Street in Springfield. Some stops included Friendship Fountain, TSI and the Convention Center.
I was happy to be an observer/hanger-outer at the second stop, which was an apartment off St. John’s Avenue. While watching the cyclists ride up, drop their bikes and run for the cooler, I noticed quite a few unfamiliar faces and was particularly impressed with the women, though few, who participated.

The race ended with a cookout at the last stop in Springfield. I got a chance to meet a few of the strangers and found out that they made their way from Gainesville, Tampa, Orlando and Charleston.
The winner of the race was from Tampa and talked about how the cycling culture hasn’t caught on as much there. He was impressed with Jacksonville’s scene and enjoyed the race.

The next race is the Wild Turkey Ride, a non-drinking alley cat on November 24 that will span through downtown’s neighborhoods. Should be another fun time.
