The first of many events will take place this Saturday night at Inertia Records and Books in Springfield. They will be hosting a vegan potluck and mix tape exchange. The flyer says it all:

Bring a dish to share, freeloaders beware. Bring a mix tape / CD for the mix tape collective. Bring a tape, take a tape.

So you want to come to the potluck, but you don’t know what to bring. If you’re not familiar with the difference between vegan and vegetarian I’ll fill you in. Vegans shun all animal products, Vegetarians do not. For example some vegetarians will eat cheese, sour cream and eggs. Vegans won’t touch the stuff and they don’t wear leather shoes.

Here’s a huge list of vegan recipes so you’ll know exactly what to bring.

In my experience at least, vegans and vegetarians skew a notch above average in the kitchen.

Some skill must be acquired in order to prepare appetizing alternatives in a consumer culture not exactly friendly to their menu choice.

But I think the larger part of this kitchen Vega-Fu is a reflection of an individuals commitment to conscious eating.

Yeah, I don't mind it as long as folks aren't militant about it. Some of it's good, but I still haven't found a fauxmeat item that didn't taste like satan taking a runny dump in my mouth. Let the veggies shine on their own, don't try to make them something they ain't. But lord help me, I love meat.

Has anyone else been out to Vento at the beach? It's a churrascaria but I just call it a meat museum and it's pretty much the most glorious thing ever.

My sister is a vegetarian and while I am all about eating meatless recipes, i just can't get into that quivering mass of gelatinous Thanksgiving blasphemy called Tofurkey.

I got her a t-shirt for her birthday that read, "Meat is Murder. Tasty Tasty Murder" ...which is my way of showing her my older-brother support for her lifestyle.
