Jacksonville Street Art update
11/27/07 • Posted in: Brooklyn, Downtown Jacksonville, Springfield, Street Art by Joey Marchy 21 Comments »Street art in Jacksonville seems to be on the rise again. In the past few weeks there have been an explosion of posters, stickers, throw-ups and murals. For about 6 months now things have been really slow on the street art front. A poster here, a tag there. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe kids are tired of getting arrested.
Here are some of the highlights. See all the street art flicks from the last week.
Brooklyn This style of poster has been pooping up all over Springfield, Downtown and Riverside. This person has been putting in some work.
Springfield A steady presence, throw-ups and a mural that just won’t stay the same.
Tallyrand Yes, Tallyrand.
Downtown

It is cool to see more street art. I’d like to see more awesome-r street art though. Perhaps as these folks get to do more, or decide to do more, the art will get more complex, better planned, and executed. Street art is a really wonderful thing.
I’d like to see more satanic street art!
lots of good stencils on the riverwalk between dowtown and riverside ave– firemen, super mario bros. coins, and those diamonds.
Sometimes it looks pretty cool, but that’s only sometimes and it’s only one persons opinion. HELLO, it is destruction of other people’s property so I’m kind of disappointed that this appears to be advocating more tags.
The original post sounds more like an observation rather than a call to tag.
Hello Mr. Donner!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (H.M.D)
your famous in a sense!!
donner parti fo life son!!!!!!!!
There should be a street art code of ethics (don’t paint on brick walls, etc.), but when it’s truly on public property, like the sidewalk, I think it’s an interesting confrontational interaction. It’s a challenge to think of how you could use that space to do something meaningful and beautiful, not just spew some ill-formed and sloppily executed ideas.
Destroying property doesn’t make anyone smile. But I like the thought of a property owner with a sort of neglected concrete wall walking up to see a brand new, intricate, awesome mural, and having a weird internal fight between being pissed and thinking it’s gorgeous.
I see those diamonds all over…. Anyone know their signifcance?
Street art is something Jacksonville severely lacks. I see a few stencils, stickers, and tags now and then but nothing large, and/or extremely artistic. Tommy Armageddon and Oiler get up though.
I find it odd that there isn’t more because downtown is dead after 6 PM leaving it a virtual ghost own.
Now some will say it’s vandalism, and yes it is. But I would rather see some form of art on all the empty building then some homeless persons urine stain.
Where in Tallyrand is the bandade?
Across from the Jiffy store on Talley just north of the Matthews.
I have an old block wall that is in serious need of some art like this, anyone know who I could get to do something about it? I’m one of those who thinks in the right place it does look better than nothing. I also think the wheat paste art is cool too. Some of the straight graffitti tags though are more of a nusiance than art though, imho.
I agree, clayton, about wheat paste vs. tagging.
The junkyard garden on Main Street could use a mural/sign of sorts as well. We need to repair part of the wall, but it’d be awesome to have something on the intact section to remind people what’s going on up there.
Anyone interested?
clayton- I would post the location of your wall and some ground rules. I had a legal wall on east 10th one time that got some brilliant work about every 10 days or so. Someone told me that people were coming from all over the country to paint it. Then they started to get sloppy and paint the bricks on the building (historic) and we had to shut it down. And then we sold it.
I looked for the zine that had the ten commandments. it was by zies and it came with a tshirt. thou shalt stick to abandon buildings IMHO. Not like there is supply problem there. And less bong drawings in the bathroom would be cool.
Clayton, where is the building?
it is the ruin of the old carriage house next to my house. Its got three walls and right now its just bare, unfortunately its not open to the public. If someone is interested in doing this, I would be more than happy to purchase the materials, email me at eatscheisse@yahoo.com
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! 08 time to explode!…enjoy this treat from Jacksonville’s own…

Keep your eyes peeled my friends!!!
oops!
I wish the Knopf guys would let someone decorate their alley wall on the bindery between Walnut/Ionia. They installed those AC units that closed off the alley to traffic and the only thing on the walls now are vines and some stuff the kids that used to live a few houses down did to it. Mainly a homage to the band Poison and an abandoned attempt at Freddy Krueger because they realized at some point it wasn’t spelled “Crugger”.
Just an ignorant question from someone who lived downtown for years and has been gone ten-how long has the Hospitality been closed down? I saw a Youtube video of barrels on Main and some of it is unrecognizable. What is the Inertia? I may go back to visit but may not recognize the old neighborhood.
Liz, not sure what the Hospitality was. In any event, I don’t think it’s around anymore. Inertia is a music and book store. They also host shows and community events. Here is their site: http://www.inertiajax.com
there’s always neat stuff in that laundromat on park, near the AP. the bathroom is fucking gross though.
