Don’t forget, Heavy Flow is opening for Gil Mantera’s Party Dream tonight, at TSI. Heavy Flow goes on about 10:30, so you’ll be able to catch them and Gil!
Thanks guys! I’ve been trying all week to find out what the movie was tonight!
my bad: movie is at 9:15-9:30, (depending on when people get there– we usually wait a little bit if more people are coming in), and, as always, just $5, with BYOB (seriously, beer, booze, whatever, bring it on in!).
And, “Grace?! She died thirty years ago!”
Thanks for the mention!
Here is the exact link to the schedule of films at the Int’l Fest of Cinema and Technology this weekend http://www.ifct.org/jax.html Hope to see you there!
really cool to see all this art stuff. I love art.
I have an idear. you think maybe we could partner up. have JaxCAL.org cover the art stuff. that way people could add their own events and you could just use an RSS feed from JaxCAL for an arts page you could create? would be easy. I know the plugins to use for it too if you’re interested.
by the way check out http://www.jaxcal.org/artfeed/jaxfeed. I’m pulling some local blogs into there. nifty. RSS rocks.
that way we’d have one source. I’m all for the one source and open source and enabling users to add their own content. I love your blog don’t get me wrong. You and Tony are the blog kings.
might be cool if we all partnered and worked together though. I really think we need to all team up if we are really going to create a real scene and some sort of cohesion. thoughts? objections? I do wonder why some people post here and some post there, and there. It becomes hard to know what’s going on.
Everyone check out http://www.JaxCAL.org/about if you haven’t. Anyone can register and add content. Hope some more of you join if you’re interested. We have over seventy users now and new folks are joining each day. really.
Thanks Joey…
byron king
would that i could! i hate that all this stuff is going on, and i’m sitting in my apartment making notecards on warranties, UCC 2-207, and duress. NO FAIR!
There can only be one king. I emailed you, B.
umm i m missing all the shows by recieving urbanjax sat morning.
joey are you posting earlier? do u think im having a problem on my end? maybe a collaboration w/ jaxcal could help out.
im not ranting, its just urbanjac turns me on to downtown… id hit every show last night if id known
For any of you who are thinking about “popping” on over to the JaxCAL about page - http://www.JaxCAL.org/about - make sure you read the first line in the heading entitled:
Reasons posts or comments might be moderated or edited:
* Doesn’t fit with JaxCAL’s style or internal mechanisms for defining contemporary art and culture.”
And you’ll know why everyone comes to urbanjacksonville.info and not JaxCAL.
UrbanJax doesn’t have an “internal mechanism” that “defines” art and culture. What the hell is that?
What’s the use of having a site where people can post things about art they like if some “internal mechanism” is gonna moderate it?
Sounds a little bush league to me.
I like to keep my art news as unbiased as possible.
And Byron, if you don’t want people commenting about you plugging your site with a 5 paragraph thesis in a comments section, write an email.
Bic pen on paper….out.
George, your best bet is to check the site everyday either by physically going there or with rss. The email newsletter is sent out at midnight not after every post. Email me if you want to know moer about rss.
Levi, that’s cool man.
if you didn’t like that line all I was trying to say is we ain’t about palm trees and ocean scenes. If you have a better way of saying that then I”m all for it. Nothing has ever been moderatied on JaxCAL. nothing.
I’m sure UrbanJax and your site would post about typical florda art beach scenes and palm tree paintings, right? come on man. don’t hate. I’m just trying to bring people together who are interested in contemporary art.
seems to be a lot of hatred in your comment. don’t know where that comes from sense I’ve never met you.
I know one thing everytime I emailed you you never emailed me back way before JaxCAL so I think you are the one that folks might want to be weary of with his internal mechanism thing not me as I always email people back. always. I don’t have a filter of who’s in and who isn’t. you seem to for some reason?
so think about that. folks. you want to post your own content feel free.
the site is growing. noone has been moderated because people know the site is not about palm trees and florida art. if you have a better way of wording that please shoot it to me or Post it on JaxCAL. you’re all welcome to join.
And Levi, my trophy soldiers project you are referring to, http://www.trophhysoldiers.com, is flyered over miami right now. Art Basel is amazing. What did a little old bic pen every do to you. And Trophy Soldiers has an about page too. I hope you like the wording in it. Maybe you could be my copy writer if you are interested.
cheers,
Byron
I meant all over Miami. typos…
Deleted that line Levi. If you have a better way of writing that please shoot it to me. Didn’t mean anything Bush like by that? Come on man. Just trying to mean for flips sake the site is about contemporary art.
Bic pens are cheap too Levi. You should try them.
And we have a lot of folks posting on JaxCAL since there are over seventy registered users now. And it’s pretty darn active.
And it’s growing every day.
And I ain’t making a flipping penny off of it. I’m trying to build community and a scene. If you can hate on that then you have real issues it seems. Issues with me not JaxCAL.
And I’ve never met you. Would have liked to have a couple of years ago but you were too cool to write me back on many occations.
I guess I was moderated by internal mechanisms for cool.
Strange huh?
Well Byron, then just say NO PALM TREES…
In fact you could just call it byronkinghatespalmtrees.com how bout that?
Then everyone would know fo sho!
Sorry if I didn’t get anything about palm trees out of “doesn’t fit with JaxCAL’s style or internal mechanisms for defining contemporary art and culture.” I pegged it more as a line from one of Hitler’s play books.
But you’re right though, I’ve never met you. All I ever got from you was a hateful email about not returning peoples email only 24 hours after the first one was sent. But you’re also wrong, I did reply to you asking why the bad attitude.
Which is apparently your calling card when it comes not getting what you want right away. Here’s an idea… Maybe thats why some people don’t want anything to do with you?
But I am impressed, even in defense of plugging all your sites, you’ve managed to plug even more. You should write a book.
Just remember Byron, Art isn’t a team sport.
Yeah collaborations are awesome, and most artist do them alot. But in the end artist tend to be individualistic. If sitting in a studio somewhere painting palm trees and beach scenes makes a guy happy, then he should be able to do that without getting slammed for it.
Don’t try to bring your art to a next level by bringing someone else’s down, that’s a terrible way to get noticed. And leaching off the fortune of others by stronghold isn’t a good way either.
Just do what you do and if people like it they’ll let you know.
Remember, no one eats food because they want to have to take a crap,
somethings are just cause and effect.
If you want to continue this conversation email me, if not that’s awesome too.
Now excuse me, Me and Silky Johnson have to put some water in JaxCAL’s momma’s dish!!! H8H8H8
very mature Levi.
Had no idea you hated me so much.
I wrote you numerous times and you wrote me back once I think?
love the attitude. that’s exactly how to do it. keep the barriers up. keep the tribal mentality and we’ll get no where. That seems to be exactly what the majority of you want anyways.
Love this. It’s like high school. You were probably really popular in high school too.
sorry Levi you are pissed at me. I might have written a few people venting emails a few years ago but it’s because generally no one returns emails in this city. At all. I find that sad, especially when folks are trying to help build an art scene.
We need to tear down the tribal mentalities that this city has in order to build cohesion and establish a real art scene. Artists may make their work in seclusion but in order to make a scene that have to unite.
Or it never happens.
I forgive your insensitive comments to my genuine offer to work together with you and all artists and lovers of contemporary art. It’s sad that someone like you would take comments out of context in order to try and attack me for an email I might have sent you years ago.
Your the one who should have just sent me an email and we could have just worked it out. I like your site. Always have. Not sure why we all can’t work together?
Joey, do you know when/how I could go and see that Sarah Crooks Flaire show? I saw her stuff at JMOCA a year or so ago and loved it. I’m sad I missed the opening party on Friday but would still love to go see her work. Please let me know if you have any info!
pshew! Man i am tired from reading all of that. You guys need to get a boxing ring or something. The fight is interesting for sure. So Levi this urbanjacksonville blog is “yours”. For some reason i thought it was someone else’s blog. Just trying to figure out this conversation.
I think both of you guys are correct with certain points. Too bad you aren’t seeing that. You are saying some of the same things really. Levi, i agree with you that inclusion is good and Byron i agree with you that exclusivity can work when creating an aesthetic sometimes. There are guidelines for both i am sure somewhere buried under some text book. i wonder.
From what i know about jaxcal and Byron, i dont think Byron is dissing those artists who paint those particular images, he is simply creating a line in the sand to define an aesthetic. I do agree with you Levi that sometimes, it sounds quite terse, so Byron maybe work on that. But everyone who doesn’t want to have anything to do with Byron sounded very hurtful, so maybe Levi, work on that? Just my thought. I know you don’t know who I am, I do not know any of you, but outsiders perspective take it or leave it.
But nonetheless this is a small community where most people have their own ideas and goals of what they want to see happen. It aint nyc ya know. it could be better if everyone works together.
why not join forces? even if you are doing the same thing it seems there is plenty of people here in jacksonville to create support. Otherwise you are creating contention if you are not creating synergy.
I think both of you might want to reconsider holding your tongues a bit, sticking the past in your pocket and “try” to work “together”
just some thoughts.
thanks joey, i’ll follow up on the rss advice.
im concerned about the dialogue bet levi and byron. i dont see a problem with jaxcals approach to specifics towards contemporary art. i never thought about it actually. and i didnt get bad vibes from jaxcal in posting matt abercrombies palm tree this weekend.
byrons gudelines were made to give general directions to the viewer, visitor of the site. i dont think they were made to be taken so literally.
Crystal, I think the show is by invite only at this point. Try contacting the Jane Gray gallery to see if you can get and appointment: janegraygallery.com
Freedomrope, I appreciate your outside perspective. Its good to have it, but I agree with you, Im trying to get Byron to take this argument out of this thread, because your right, this isn’t my site. And I can see where It might have sounded a bit malicious towards Byron, but there are a lot of other factors, people, and situations involved in this that Byron knows of and I didn’t feel the need to go name dropping on a public forum. It was just a build up of many bad occurrences on Byrons part and I just felt the need say what I know there are alot of others thinking. I understand that It may seem like Byron is trying to do a good thing with JaxCAL and yeah, it’s not New York and we need all the help we can get in starting a movement, but it’s just in my nature to call bullshit when I see it. If done properly it could definitely be a good thing, Byron Just has to work on his people skills first.
If you cruise around some of the other local blogs (URBANJAX LINK LIST) You might just stumble upon some other threads by Byron just like this where you might also get an idea for why I did what I did. But then again, the Internal Mechanism might have got to them already.
Bryon, like I said before if you want to continue this conversation like the “Player haters Ball” this is…Email me, i know you have it.
If not Ive said my peace, and I wish you good Luck.
Crystal- Jane Gray has gallery hours Monday through Friday until 5pm (not sure when they open). You can see the show during that time or call for an appointment.
Levi,
I thank you for pointing out the evil intentions I have for
trying to help bring people together.
You are so right. You told me. I agree. Everyone please
do not trust me or my intentions for trying to build a community
art portal where people can post their own work and such.
My real intentions are to rule the evil art blogging empire by
writing dirty emails to people who don’t return my emails?
Thank you. And why would I email you? You have a tendency of
not emailing people back. Seems it would be more appropriate for you to email me
since you have flamed me on this blog and have tried to ruin my character.
I like your http://www.urbanartwarfare.com site. And only want
to work with you not against you or anyone who’s into contemporary
art.
nicely put freedomrope.
What can I say about this conversation, that hasn’t already been said about Afghanistan… It looks bombed out…and depleted! - Silky Johnson. Over and Out!
For anyone crazy enough to still watching us two crazy assholes hate on one another, I have some news.
An outside force has stepped in and brought some reason to this chaos…
there will now be peace in IRAQ… And we will sign the treaty. haha
Joey, we gotta be near the record for most comments on a post by now?
whats the stats?
Not even close. Check out:
