City Market

In case you haven’t been to the blog all week I’m throwing a party Saturday night (12/15) at TSI. There will be two bands, Buffalo Tears and Airport Factory, starting at 7:00pm. I might even DJ for a while if I can talk TSI into letting me in the booth. $2 at the door before 9:00.

I have no clue what’s going on in Jacksonville right now. Work, Christmas and general holiday apathy have kept me away from my newsreader. I’m sick and tired of my TU news feeds. Wading through hundreds of stories only to find crap, crap, crap has me on the verge of deleting my subscription. I’m going to take a peek into my news feeds (over 300 items) to see what’s happening:

Biggest news I missed this week: The Library. Subscribe for updates on the “next chapter in Downtown Jacksonville”. I’m stoked. For more juicy details on this project check out this Metro Jacksonville post on The Library.

I’m warming to the name. At first I was like “duh!”. You don’t pick the first name that pops into your head, or let your grandmother name your multi-million dollar development project. The more I think about it though, the more I feel like it fits. I mean, I’ve been calling it that for the past 20 years. And “The Old Library” doesn’t have the same ring.

JTA to re-examine Downtown bus routes
This sounds like a huge success for Metro Jacksonville, one of the major opponents of the city’s BRT (bus rapid transit) plan. What’s interesting about this article is no mention of Metro Jacksonville.

JTA … is asking for input from two key groups – Downtown Vision Inc. (DVI) and the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission (JEDC).

Read about the Metro Jacksonville rail plan. Also here are Ten Reasons to Oppose JTA’s Transit Plan.

Apparently you can get some of Folio Weekly’s articles online. This Go Green feature is from the December 10th issue of Folio. Thanks for the tip Sustainabuild.

Did I hear you say you have no idea what to do before the Urban Jacksonville blog party? How about an educational boat tour of the St. Johns River?

Saturday, December 15, 10:00 AM – Noon. Take a ride on the river with Riverkeeper. Enjoy the outdoors, learn about local history & ecology, and have fun with hands-on activities!

Springfield Canned Food Drive
The Springfield Women’s Club is still seeking non-perishable foods for local needy families this holiday season. Please drop off any canned food items at the club, any Springfield organizational meeting or contact Michelle Guglielmo Gilliam at mguges at yahoo.com.
