The Hum: Jacksonville street art time machine
02/11/08 • Posted in: Street Art by Joey Marchy 16 Comments »Jaxscene has posted issues 1-3 of The Hum zine on their Flickr account. There aren’t any dates on the covers or or pages, but looking through them I’d have to guess they are at least 4-5 years old. The pages of The Hum are a great window into the Jacksonville street art scene from that time. I saw a lot of familiar faces and some who don’t get up any more, at least not around here.
A few years ago a friend of mine gave me Issue #3. Looking back on it now I see a lot of similarities between when I am doing now with Urban Jacksonville and what The Hum was doing back then. It appears to have been a huge inspiration to me, even if it was subconcious.

thanks joey. i wish i knew someone liked it. i have been working on #4 for like 3 years now. it’s all drafted on paper just never put it together. i wonder if i have all those street art pictures but in color. but yeah, back in the days a zine was the easiest way to reach people with your views. even though the hum had no opinions in it.
really cool Joey. I never even heard of them but, i didnt really get involved in the Jax scene until about a little over a year ago. Really cool. Great flashback!
Really cool. Too bad I wasn’t here when these zines were around.
Hell yeah! I still got them bitches. AV, UAW & Transmit was wreckin shit back in the day! I feel a street revival coming on. boom pow surprise…ohhhh
yeah, to bad transmit was short lived it was a good idea. i still rock my shirt every now and then. uaw was always top notch.
“AV, UAW & Transmit was wreckin shit back in the day!”
Nothing like a little vandalism to make privileged white teenagers feel like they’re revolutionary urban artists.
No doubt barnard…
Uh oh…Is that a glass of Haterade in the Fridge I see?
Yep. Its next to the purple stuff.
it was street art with a message. as far as i can tell none of those three artist spray painted anything it was all wheat pasted. i’m sure if they wanted to vandalize the town they would have used something more permanent. sorry it wasn’t of a little kid picking flowers, a big guy with balloons or a old couple.(which i enjoy by the way)but in all it was to make this city more culturable, and as far as i know none of them were white. stop hating, stop being racist, and labeling people. i thought that issue was discussed in the 90’s.
St. Francis said,
“A man who uses his hands is a laborer. One who uses his hands and mind is a craftsman. He who uses his hands, and his mind, and his heart is an artist.”
It takes courage, skills and time to create good street art. It takes only a second for someone to criticize and make assumptions of others on a blog.
Hey, I know people that had “street art” on their buildings. They were pissed and had to have it painted over only to have it repeated. I’m not saying that some of it isn’t attractive. The thing is, beauty is different for everyone. Therefore it should be put on something they own, not on something someone else owns. If you feel differently, then you should allow others to kick dents in your car. Hell, someone may find that attractive and you can get a dent puller pretty cheap at an auto parts store.
Tsk, tsk Johnny!
Nothing like a suburban kid telling us what street art is or isn’t! Shouldn’t you be mowing your lawn or something?
suburbiasucks, you have an issue, but it’s misguided I live downtown too dumbass
… “I live downtown too” …
Holy fu••, if I only knew never would I have questioned your profound knowledge of arts and what seems to be a keen sense of aesthetics and human rights. My sincere apologies to you, sir.
what a dipshit
