I wish all the scenester dumbasses who bitch and moan about Black Kids getting popular would get over themselves and their too-cool-for-school attitude towards everything. Because you know what? They’re not cool at all- They’re jealous. What a pitiful emotion. Black kids deserve every drop. Expect to hear their songs at the B+W.

it’s possible to see no redeeming aspect in a band’s music and not be jealous, just for the record. i don’t see anyone complaining about black kids getting popular, in fact it’s a little disturbing that so many people are into this. i do agree, they do deserve every drop of whatever is coming their way, but, whatever that means and what it has to do with music i will never know.
Yeah- no jealousy here, just hilarity that this singer kid went from fronting a horrible American Eagle emo band when that shit was “cool”, and now, wow!, he’s sportin’ tight cut offs and looking like every other TSI clone, and, also wow!, sounding like so many other flavor-of-the-month Pitchfork bands.
But, and no irony or sarcasm, good for them, I hope they have fun and enjoy it; the band is just not for me. Well made video, though, too.
The Singer Kid and the Drummer Kid are the first DJ’s of TSI, way back when it was in Springfield and on up until they left for the UK. So if anything, they got kids into the music they’re into now. As I recall, they go way back to the days of Thee Imperial, when everyone used to dance there. About 4-5 years ago.
So wouldn’t be the other way around?
i can’t get why people can’t just support others achievements. if you don’t like it, don’t make it a point to let everyone know. that makes you sound jealous. music is all personal taste, i might have music people like but i promise you i have music a lot of people don’t like. and you can’t even became to tell my why i should or shouldn’t listen to it. i’m happy for the black kids, they are getting a chance to do their thing. also in my opinion not all pitchfork bands sounds the same.

Who cares if someone changes the way they dress or the music they listen to. Fashion and music are in a constant state of evolution and the life cycles are getting shorter and shorter. If we never change the way we dress or the music we listen to then the world would be a boring place.
In fact we’d probably all be rocking wallet chains, flannel and listening to Temple of the Dog if that was the case.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that, just saying.

it’s not my kind of music but they are good folks.
however, and this is aimed at other comments, i don’t buy into the whole idea about music being purely born taste. i think like any taste it develops over time bent to innate leanings. what that means in the realm of opinions i don’t know. probably nothing, but i believe a few people had a point about this kind of music sort of being the status quo and not building on much and not really adding anything to music as a whole.
does that decrease it’s value or mean there’s something wrong with their success?
no, of course not.
it’s just a different branch of music.
it’s dance and it’s pop.
it’s music that seeks to entertain and give people what they want which is more stuff to listen to and dance to.
they do it well and there’s nothing wrong with that.
you just have to learn to separate that kind of music from music built on … well i guess art or progression or idea expression… whatever all that means. one form is in no way superior to the other… it’s just a different area and approach. you can’t take this type of stuff too seriously or you’ll hemorrhage.

Actually, I have to say, having looked up and read the singer’s interview with the Guardian from last Friday, he seems like an earnest guy and even owns up to being in that terrible emo band– which not many guys who suddenly find themselves in the limelight would do, so I have to say, to a certain degree, I stand corrected.
What horrible emo band??? I don’t seem to remember that I remember lots of bands from these guys though… like Cubby and The Dirty Birds, neither of which were emo, both of which were something in the range of 5 years ago … AND both really good local bands who worked hard but didn’t make it out of Jacksonville. (and that’s not even getting into the whole Lugnut and Honey Locust thing of high school times both of which were out on the road touring from what I remember)
So, they deserve everything they get and I’m glad they are the guys repping Jax… belive me it could be a whole lot worse (anyone remember Limp Bizkit?).
Anyway great video, and this song just keeps growing on me… often times I catch myself singing it to myself…
*Incidentally, I was over in London a couple of weeks ago and it was really weird to walk into a shoe store and open up some local London fanzine and read about guys you know from back home….
Wow, they have definitely grown a lot since they left Jax. I hope they continue to grow and be successful. Cool video, too.
Apparently Jacksonville is going deaf, or is blinded by friendship or the glitz of a band actually landing a successful tour. The Black Kids may be earning some success now, but it is only for the fact of a very simplistic and catchy song, and the overhyping it’s received. Pitchfork has been known to catapult some pretty horrendous bands in the past, and Black Kids are no exception. While some of the members may be nice people, and apparently have all their buddies standing up for them here, the fact of the matter is that the rest of the music doesn’t have enough strength to pull them through for very long. The industry will chew them up and spit them out if they can’t come up with stronger and more organized material that won’t land them in the bargain bin next year. They could surprise us critics, but I honestly just don’t see it happening right now.
And regarding Brendon’s statement that they got the kids into the music they’re into now a whole whopping 4-5 years back: No, they didn’t. There were other DJs on the scene in Jacksonville before them that also helped found and build the indie exposure. Sure, they may have helped, but it was a collective effort between several people. Perhaps if you weren’t 17 at the time, you could have seen this.
Wow, I don’t much care for the band, or their music, I think “horrendous” is a little strong, no? I mean, they are clearly better than a lot of schlock out there. While I personally do not care for the music, I can clearly say that it is not motivated by any animus towards them, unlike S.T. here.
But, I will say it is funny to assert that the singer guy was DJ’ing at old TSI 4-5 years ago, because 1) 5 years ago that place was still a shithole liquor store/lounge, and 2) 4 years ago I went there all the time and never once saw that guy behind the laptop.
Todd, I completely agree on my mistake. “Horrendous” was entirely too strong of a word to describe BK. Perhaps “lackluster” would have been a more fitting term.
