…are like peanut butter and jelly. They go great together between two pieces of bread, or two beers. My sister-in-law just returned home from 3 years in Chicago and this is going to be her first Art Walk. Ever! Luckily for her it’s going to be a good one. The weather is going to be in the high 70s tomorrow night and there’s no sign of rain in sight.
Two of the best Art Walk events will be re:CHARGE08 related. You’ll remember, prior to the best April Fools Day prank in the city, I posted on re:CHARGE08, an AIGA sponsored design conference here in Downtown Jacksonville.
re:CHARGE will be hosting events at two Art Walk venues. These shows will be free and open to the public. First is Circuits, a digital art show at the Burrito Gallery (map)
Circuits is twelve 20″ Apple iMacs, two 30″ Cinema Displays and two 12 foot projections. The large projection features examples from all the artists with full sound. Each of the smaller screens is dedicated to a single artist or collective and continually loops their work.
Artists include PES, We Work For Them, MOOVlab, ©ause Collective, Jeff Boortz, Eric Dyer, and others. Experience 16 moving screens of this fascinating emerging genre. Curated by Doug Grimmett, Primal Screen.
I saw Doug Grimmett speak at the last re:CHARGE and I am very excited to see any show he has curated. Check out the Primal Screen website for the quality of work you can expect at Circuits.
The next show I recommend is the “Get Out the Vote” poster show project at the Opaq Gallery above TSI. This is going to be the last time you can go to an Art Walk show at Opaq without sweating through your shirt, so you better get down there. The winning poster is pictured above.
Discover Design, paired local high school students interested in design with professionals from the local design community. Over the course of three months, the group met for six sessions at the Jacksonville Main Library to create original Get Out the Vote posters that focus on the 2008 Presidential Election.
Hmm, that sounds like a good idea for an art show.

Hey all,
Just wanted to mention, since it’s not really out there anywhere, that My Folks and the ignatius wrylys are playing with us tomorrow night at Burrito Gallery.
These are two great great local bands…you can check out some of their music here: http://www.myspace.com/myfolksband
and here: http://www.myspace.com/lautrecote
We had a blast playing Hemming Plaza at Art Walk last month, and I hope that everyone who saw us had fun as well. Hope to see you all at the show!
Wurd up!
Just wanted to say congrats to my mentee J.T. Felix on winning the competition!
Thanks for posting up about The Art Center. We all worked real hard to make this huge mosaic piece for the Art Walk this month. You really gotta see it. Its easy to pick out the one I did. I like the scary things.

If you are thinking about skipping out on art walk this month don’t do it. The “Circuits” show upstairs at the Burrito Gallery is a MUST-SEE event. Things like this don’t come to Jacksonville that often and Doug Grimmett of Primal Screen in Atlanta has worked insanely hard on putting together a show of the most talented digital artists around the country. Apple has sponsored it and you will be sorry if you miss it. DO NOT MISS THIS!!!! P.S. Stop by at Opaq to see the posters too! :)
Karen has a good point. Its not to often we get a show like the one were having over at The Burrito Gallery. The Cicuit show and the poster showing at Opaq are must sees. Should be really cool.
Ooooooo, I’m getting kinda excited about tonight.
Hmmm…I wonder why the graphics majors at DA didn’t hear about the Get Out the Vote thing. You would think…
Kelly,
The AIGA mentoring program is open to any high school student who is interested in art and design from any high school in Jacksonville–it wasn’t exclusive to the Frank H. Peterson teens (there was actually 1 student from Jackson). This is the first time we’ve done anything like this and we “marketed” it through the public libraries’ teen departments. We didn’t get a huge response from doing this and when it was getting down to the wire and we still didn’t have kids I happened to meet a teacher at Frank H. Peterson at one of our AIGA events in December and said his kids would love to do something like this so it kind of just worked out that way.
Because this “pilot” program was so successful we will be starting another one in the Fall for a different project. We would LOVE to have kids from every high school in the city and hope that by doing this show at Opaq we were able to get the word out about it and get people interested in it. We are VERY open to suggestions to improve on the program. If you would like to talk more about this you can e-mail me at karenk at thekurtisgroup dot com. (sorry don’t want to get spammed)

What a great opportunity for the students Karen AND a
successful event at Opaq. I think of my students will be
interested in this for next year, so I will be emailing you.
Joey- thanks for posting this.
Circuits was the best exhibit at art walk that I’ve seen n some time. I am interested to watch this new art genre grow.
Thanks Brittni–I would love to hear from you! And thanks to everyone that came out to both shows!
