Summertime in the City update for 4/21
04/21/08 • Posted in: Events, Springfield by Joey Marchy 17 Comments »This is the first official Summertime in the City update. I’ll probably post updates every other week until we get closer to the festival. Right now we are booking events and raising money. At this point the festival is still scheduled for August 2nd. We have considered moving is back one weekend if we can book a certain local band. So far we have the following events confirmed:
Zombie Bikes and Burro Bags 1520 Main Street
Bike repair and workshops on different types of bike maintenance and riding safety along with pamphlets on bike laws. Bike Polo mallets will also be available for anyone during the day and the week prior at Zombie Bikes. Bike rentals will also be available for adults and kids. You can stop by the shop and put one on hold the week before the festival.
Dance Party for Kids
It’s a modern dance party for young children, with DJ Caz.
Summertime in the City Handmade Market
All things handmade: clothing, jewelry, baked goods and more!
Also
- Breakdance Contest with $500 cash prize
- Outdoor reggae soundclash with 74 Soundsystem and Natti Pro Soundsystem
- Ice Cream Trucks
We are planning lots of other things and as soon as we confirm them, we’ll let you know. If you want to stay connected you can always get updates here on Urban Jacksonville, but there are other ways to stay informed about the festival:
Summertime in the City on Facebook
Summertime in the City on MySpace
Official Summertime in the City website (Ha! I know!)

How do I go about signing up to sell my tote bags at the Handmade Market?
And by “certain local band”, he means Limp Bizkit. Let’s not jump to any conclusions here.
mofro.
Just please tell me they aren’t scheduling this thing around Black Kids playing. Please
radiohead
drive by truckers.

radioheah? really tony? i’m so letting everyone know that radiohead is playing!
ok adam. but make sure you tell them it is not yet confirmed!
I was kind of hoping they could work black kids into the name so we could get Faux 30 out for a live remote. I don’t think many bands are making much if anything. They would be doing it for the neighborhood. In that regard the bigger the band the better for the neighborhood. Even if its not your cup of tea which I’m sure you’ve written about on your blog. So try to hold your nose when you see something you don’t like with the festival or try suggesting what the volunteer organizers should be considering or even better if you know someone that wants to play for free or cheap have them chime in. If being old tells me anything; the more I can’t stand music the more popular it becomes. Once you’ve hated a band all the way to the top you see it over and over and are less likely to tell people what they should like. Anyhoo, comments are stupid.
By all means, if booking the Black Kids gets more people, more coverage, etc, that is great, and I think it will truly be better for the festival– i was just saying that to schedule the festival around one band seemed a little too fawning is all.
Mofro - black kids - limp bizkit - radiohead - lynard skynard - whoever - its gonna be in springfield and it’s gonna be awesome
point taken Todd. As an elder stateswoman in this town I can tell you that supporting the locally grown will get you better content and shinier hair. you can whisper to your buds how this sound is not your bag over the noise and the crowd. But if you are able to to keep a crowd away with just opinion, it sets all back. I love that this thing is taking off. It is easy to stop things great but impossible to stop great memories. I love you duval!
I also meant that Fauz news would cover the controversy of the name not the band. Because the name, even if you don’t like the music, is original, creative and provokes conversation. Which is what springfield needs. I love the oh six!
Agreed. By making this kick-ass the first time, I think it can only get bigger and better.
Did anyone contact Jay-Z to see if he was available to play? What?
i want to volunteer!
