Here is a first hand account from someone who was there:
About 9:40 there were 2 shots. Tom and the bartender were the only people inside, Everyone was out back or in the bathroom. It didn’t sound like a gun, more like blackcat fireworks. It wasn’t until the bartender ran out back and was screaming that we knew something happened, no one thought it was really a gun. The shooting was right inside the doorway.
Does anyone know what happened? Thanks for the informative article First Coast News! Here’s the video report.
A man has been taken to the hospital after a shooting at a bar. The shooting happened at the Shanty Town Pub, located on Main Street near East 8th Street. Police won’t say whether the shooting happened inside the bar or outside. No word on the victim’s condition
This is all hearsay, but I heard:
From what I have been able to gather Tom (boston guy who is always at Shanty) went outside, not sure if he was going home or getting fresh air, but all of a sudden people inside heard three or four shots. They ran out side to find him on the ground. The thinking is, he may have inadvertently broken up a robbery attempt on shanty. He is awake, but in critical condition at Shands.

Damn. I hope he is ok.
man, that sucks. I was just there for the art show this weekend. Hope the guy will be ok.
That is really unfortunate. I really hope they find out who did this if they haven’t.
fuck, man. this is lterally less than 100 yards from my house. desperate times make desperate men and all, but this is unsettling.
Tom is my roomate and is a great guy. I cant believe this happend to him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
damn.
So sorry to hear about this. Praying for Tom and justice. And will be supporting shanty in person. Springfield will be stronger and more vigilent because of this. If there was anyone who would take a bullet or 3 for shanty it was Tom. God bless.
James- Please suggest any ways we can help
and/or visit..
From the TU “Just In”… “blog”
“A man was seriously injured Monday after being shot in a robbery gone awry at a Springfield bar, according to authorities.
The shooting at Shanty Town Pub on Main Street near West Sixth Street happened around 9:45 p.m. The man was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital. His condition was unknown this morning.
Police arrested Curtis Lee Jones III, 21, and Nicholas Jerome McCray, 18, in the shooting. Both men were charged with attempted murder and attempted armed robbery with a firearm and were being held in the Duval County jail. Jones was also charged with possession of a firearm or concealed weapon by a convicted felon.
Police believe Jones and McCray planned the robbery throughout the day, but when they walked up to the bar, the victim tried to take the gun and Jones shot him twice in the chest, according to the arrest reports.”
Hope this guy pulls through.
sounds like he might have come up in South Boston.
as an aside, the “Just In” feed is quite good for local “breaking” news

how are marianne and ian?
Tony is right if anyone were to take a bullet for Shanty it would be Tom.
Atticus..thanks for the link; a lively debate has flared up there.
Reading the comments attached to that link made me want to chew on glass. Seriously? Someone gets shot and and that leads to a debate regarding the merits of neighborhood bars?
Anyway — please don’t let this horrible thing scare you away from what’s ordinarily a safe, comfortable, awesome place to hang out. I was talking to some of the other folks who were there when it happened, and we agreed that if we aren’t avoiding Shanty, no one else is allowed to, either. I’ll be up there later this evening.
I’ll be there tonight Annie.
the folks at shanty are like my family and this is really scary!!! tom….the guy is soooooo fucking nice and genuine!!! i hope they put these two away for a long time… desperate times??? maybe but why not do what the rest of us do…GET A FUCKING JOB!!!!!! see that way you don’t have to rob or steal or anything else illegal…two fucking low life assholes!!!! MAY YOU ROT IN HELL!!!!!!
Yeah, sorry…I forgot the normal caveat I include when telling folks about “Just In.”
It is a great feed and often does break local stories before TV or radio media. Even if its not breaking a story it is usually providing depth that you often dont get outside of print journalism. Its the best thing going for the TU right now…except Mark Woods.
HOWEVER, now that commenting is live again, I strongly reccommend resisting the temptation to engage the mouthbreathing dead-enders that lurk there. I refuse to even look at the comments anymore. I strive to remain positive about Jacksonville overcoming its historical challenges…reading that drivel often sends me into fits of hometown cynicism.
If online commentary and thoughtful debate is your bag, go somewhere else. MetJax,Urbjax, and..(.whats that other one…put together by Diane M. ?) offer more productive and civil, yet provacative discussion.
The changing dynamics in Springfield ,and other neighborhoods, is an ongoing issue that merits further exploration.
And IMO, important perspectives have been and continue to be excluded by the digital divide.
Well, that sucks! I hope he comes through this OK.
I will not be avoiding the place either.
I am playing there tomorrow night with a host of other noise acts.
I won’t let some thugs ruin what is otherwise a safe place.
I tried posting all day from work, but they keep blocking my posts! My heart goes out to Tom and the whole crew. You guys know me from River City Soul Co and The Snacks Blues Band- Shanty Town and all in it are like family to me, they will never lose my support! This whole event illustrates why so many people are scared of Downtown and Springfield. On the same coin though, it shows all the more need for more people to join our community and we can all watch out for each other. It sucks that a couple of punk-ass thugs can just walk in to an ordinarily peaceful place and do something so terrible. If there is any wayI can help, please let me know. I hope they pay dearly for this.
Thanks to all the uj elitists and otherwise who came out to sooper Tuesday. Lots of people we’re generous and threw in to the hat for Tom. Maryann has the envelope and we talked about how there will be lots of opportunities and benefits. But you can also head straight to shanty with your support. I have met good people that have Tom in common.we are all pulling for ya! And the Celtics crushed!
I was the guy in the bathroom.
I was the person in the bathroom.
How about bio’s on the two suspected thugs :Curtis Lee Jones III, 21, and Nicholas Jerome McCray, 18,
does anyone know where these two came from?
Don’t you know their parent(s) must be so proud. Think this is the first offense for these two? Just like having sex offenders posted on the internet shouldn’t we be able to see where all the convicted felons live?
McCray’s only record in Duval County is a ticket on a bicycle and one citation for staying out after curfew and possesing tobbaco as a minor.
The elder Jones does not show up in the Duval Court records under that name. He is the one who was cited as the convicted felon.
The way things went down, I find myself wondering if the younger suspect might be cooperating.
The JSO stated that they thought the robbery had been planned all day.
How would they know that? Was there anyone who noticed the suspects hanging around… or perhaps one of them is talking?
How where they apprehended so quickly?
It doesnt seem like the victim would have had the opportunity to ID the shooter(s), ida know…
I was there the other night and just posted a description of the shooting on my blog.
Thank you Chris.
