Most would have thought we would have had that conversation by now. I'm not sure if it will ever happen or if we will ever heal those wounds. My hope is that we will one day.

Great article, but this is only one in a hundred or so stories of how Jacksonville has dealt with and continues to deal with african american citizens. However informative these are, they fail to suggest the most important thing. Which is, how can the city of Jax & the nation as a whole began to have honest & open conversations about the effects of racism & slavery has had on our african american families & communities.

The powers that be have such contempt for Black neighborhoods because those neighborhoods highlight the great injustices that were done to the Black community in the not-too-distant past...PEACE.

Another example of real journalism from the Folio. If only the Times-Union could publish this kind of work. I remember the rush to demolish La Villa and all the surrounding hoopla. The city leaders barely hid their contempt of La Villa.

MetroJax did an article on LaVilla awhile back, as well as the wholesale demo of buildings city-wide, with before and after photos. It was pretty shocking. I printed it up to remember and mark how screwed up we were in the past.

That article was very informative for me as I am two years new to Jacksonville (one year to downtown). Just the other day my fiance and I played basketball over at the Klutho Park courts and noticed that the houses on the other side of Hogan's creek had been torn down. After playing, we walked over there and spoke with a guy named Harold who was gathering the left behind bricks. He told us a little bit about the houses and how the area was called Sugar Hill (which seems to be north of La Villa). He currently lives in the historic house where African American baseball players, artists, and guests would stay while in Jacksonville. After hearing about it, I had to do some research on the Sugar Hill area, and so I found a 1999 article from the Times-Union if anyone is interested...it's short and sweet, but I couldn't find anymore info. If anyone knows about the area, I'm curious.
Here is the address....

I loved this article. Aside from being informative, it was also plain ol' good writing. Nice job, Gwynedd.
