Citizen and Journalism are two words I wouldn’t think have much to do with it. More like Incindiary Headlinism. And Baseless Claimism. With a hint of Message Boredism. Its hard enough out there without Provocatuer Fantasism.

I was at First Friday hanging outside Anomaly (Awesome veggie dogs btw) and all of us knew something bad was going to happen. A large line was forming from the old Club 5 and started spilling into the streets. A group of us left to ride down towards the YMCA to watch fireworks. On our return to 5 points, we rode straight into a riot. I use the word “riot” because it’s the best description for the situation. The Park St block was full of people in the streets and approximately 30 young black men were running towards us as we came to a stop at the light. I saw people jumping on cars, running, yelling, etc… We took off as soon as the light tuned green and had a helicopter search light on us for a bit as we left the area.

The next day I scoured the web for any news on the situation and it seemed like it never happened.

As for this being a race riot, NO. A riot, YES.

Message boredism is what we are left to when the corporate media decides to bury an important story.

I showed up right as everything was being dispersed, and saw a friend of ours, who was promptly telling all the black youths he saw that they should “get the fuck out of here right now, shit is going down”. As soon as he passed, a cop with a machine gun approached some black kids hanging out on their car watching the chaos, and immediately starts into them with, “What are you, crack kids? How come you’re still here? Why doesn’t anyone have the keys to this car? Get out of here” and then doesn’t say a word to us as we walk past toward starlight. At this point, probably 30-40+ kids were streaming down Park St, as the helicopters circled overhead. We talked to a couple people who were around and everyone said something to the effect of someone being shot. At starlight people were saying that two kids shot at somebody over by the Wendy’s. I talked to the cashier at the Shell who was working that night and all he said was that it was just some kids running wild, causing a ruckus, but he intoned that there was gunplay. As I was leaving Starlight, some kids called out to my friend, saying they remembered him from high school, but as soon as we started talking to them an office came up to them, told them they have to leave right this moment and didn’t say a word to us. I yelled some bullshit about how it was because we were white, or something stupid, and the cop didn’t bat an eye at me, but he was intent on dispersing the black youths. Crazy shit.

Riot or not- there is no reason that this incident shouldn’t have been covered. Wtf!!!! I have to read about Bo Bice at freebirds but there is nothing on mayhem in the middle of 5 points??

I still think everything was being blown way out of proportion. I was working at St. Vincent’s that night and absolutely nothing came in through the ER related to this sort of thing. Actually it was a lot more quiet than the last few 4th’s I’ve worked there.

When they’d have the parties and shit at the hall across from Shantytown, the kids would always get unruly and it wasn’t on the news either. We can try and be all PC about it but guess what? These type of shows draw in a bad crowd and shit always happens. Always. If it had been an actual riot, there’d be pics and vids of it everywhere. Everyone has a camera or phone now. The business owners around there aren’t going to say shit because then they’ll have to defend themselves against claims of racism and that the kids there were just looking to have a good time and that the lack of venue space led to “disenfranchisement and some physical manifestations of their urban plight”. I wouldn’t want to have to deal with that bullshit either.

SD. Please stop trying to conjure race. It shows a lack of respect to the great district that you founded from the sale of your Seattle restaurant yacht on the way up the Delaware to fight back the British.

You couple that with the demand that all the black kids LEAVE rather than telling them that the venue was no longer selling tickets and there is obviously a strong current of racism…
Especially in the rarified condition of being under represented in the middle of a block in a sea of possibly hostile people…
After all, given the evidence in this quote, there was clearly a high level of racial tension long before the line was cut off…
That said, it was a riot, and its troubling that it seems there are a few that would rather make up a different word or pretend it didnt happen.

I drove through it, I was terrified, my husband was in a seprate vehicle and I had the kids. All I know was there were a ton of cops and people running everywhere, I closed my windows, when a group of people stared banging on my truck and prayed I would get out there quick!! I called my father who is a JSO detectie, but he hadn’t heard anything, but said it sounded like a riot from my discrption!! I have been trying to find out what went on, but get nowhere, my dad still hasn’t heard anything either, it isn’t his department, so he probablly won’t!! All I know is someone needs to teach their kids to have some respect or no one will survive, this is rediculous, no one has any respect these days!! I would have been beaten, and black andblue if I acted like that!! Sorry, but I am appauld at our city and how the kids run around like they own everything and everyone!! Something needs to be done!!

Riot? (ha). Juts some kids acting crazy, running around wild, and causing a little disruption. Noone got hurt, no property damage to speak of…..if this is a riot then people are pretty sheltered.

Me and my boyfriend had just finished watching fireworks down the street a few blocks from the points so we decided to take a walk through the points while the traffic died down. as we approached park street we could hear a lot of commotion, and loud music. we passed a large group of teenage black boys but thought nothing of it and continued on to park street. when we finally made it to where the optical clinic used to be we were engollfed by at least 2000 angry, out of control, black people. (i only say black b/c i dont know how else to tell the story without leaving out detail) we started to walk towards the other side of the street when we ran into two police officers trying to persuade the crowd to move away from the theatre. we tried asking the officers what was happening but he simply asked us to continue walking to our vehicles and leave… so we did. i didnt see any fights or blood, but we did pass a few daring people smoking joints 200 ft from the officers.
i wouldnt neccissarily call the crowd a riot, but then again we might have left before anything serious broke out, and if so, thank God we did.

I don’t what everyone else considers a riot, but when my truck is bombarded and pounded on while cops are ready with guns and helicopters, I call it a riot!! Weather or not is was just abunch of kids that got out of hand, doesn’t matter a riot is a riot and something needs to be done about it!!
