About 6 months ago I came up with and idea to throw a political poster show. In the heat of the Hillary/Obama Democratic nomination process I couldn’t stop thinking about how we are living in historic times. It’s possible that in a little over three months we may have a black man as president. With this show I want to capture some of the energy and wonder I think this country is going to experience between now and November.
So, I present to you: Partisan the Sea – A Politically Opinonated Poster Show
The first step was finding a place to hold the show. I was lucky that Shaan Batten, who owns Nest Living, introduced me to Mike Cassala from The Churchwell Lofts. The ground-floor retail space of the Churchwell building is absolutely perfect for this show. There is about 4,000 square feet of space with 20+ foot ceilings, huge wood support beams and drywall. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect place.

I wanted to make sure the show was open on two nights, with one of those nights being the last Art Walk before the November election. I did something similar with the The Color of Munny, the last art show I organized, and that turned out awesome. We had a great turnout on both nights with the Art Walk night being by far the best night of the show. The Black Kids played, which was awesome, so I wanted to make sure music was a big part of this show too.
Music will be a big part of both nights of Partisan the Sea. The Royal Treatment will be DJing both nights, followed by America Del Sur and Willie Evans Jr. on Friday September 26th and The N Word and Tough Junkie on Wednesday October 1st. There will also be after parties each night at Shantytown with more music to be announced.
The fun doesn’t stop with music, art and drinks. The Jacksonville Chapter of the AIGA will also be a huge part of the show. They will be providing an educational component including Ballot Design: Good vs. Bad ballot design, along with a Top 10 of good ballot design and Design Battle: Obama vs. McCain campaign materials. Woot! Also thanks to my coworker and AIGA member Varick from nGen Works for designing the beautiful Partisan the Sea website.
FINALLY, none of this would have been possible without my boyz from Urban Art Warfare and Halftone Def Studios who designed and printed the posters and have been with me every step of the way.
