Urban Jacksonville Endorsement of Barack Obama for President

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone who reads this blog regularly that I’m officially endorsing Barack Obama for President of the United States. I thought this endorsement would be fitting on a day where Obama is in Jacksonville in a final push for Florida voters before the election.

I often look back and wish I could have experienced certain times in the history of our country. The 60′s hippie revolution on San Francisco, New York City in the 80′s when hip hop and graffiti were being born and the moon landing. I think to myself how cool it would have been being there to experience those events. I wonder if the people who were there realized they were taking part in something culture and nation-changing.

In my own lifetime I’ve experienced two events others will surely look back on and say “Wow, those were historic times”. I’m talking about the events of September 11th and the Bush Presidency, possibly some of the darkest times for our country. I’m about to experience a third.

It’s the day before one of the biggest elections in the history of our nation and I feel like this is another one of those culture and nation-changing events and I’m very excited to be taking part. I am casting my vote for Barack Obama because I this country needs to be shaken up. To me it’s more than economic or foreign policy. Those things are important, but we need someone leading our country who thinks different.

I feel like Jacksonville and it’s current administration is a microcosm of our national political scene with good ol’ boys and special interests pulling the string of our legislators. They are looking out for themselves and big business when they should be working to improve the city. So my vote tomorrow is not only for Barack Obama but for the principle of casting out the old way of thinking and governing in favor of making things better for the people of this country and this city.

in comes "good cop", and of course, us prisoners are happy to see him. sad he's usually the last before you're locked up if you don't "work with him". all of those well-documented fema camps aren't for nothing. there's hope for change, but it's not in politics. shame obama, too is fulfilling the interests of cfr/bilderberger, and that ain't a fast food restaurant. as predictable as the uproar over both faces of this perverted cult of celebrity is, this shit is still CREEPY. wake up, people. do just a little bit of your own research.

i fundamentally disagree, Jeremiah. I think you seriously underestimate the american public. obama's campaign was definitely very showy, but it was also very substantial when it cam to the issues. he continuously went over policy, including numbers, percents, and incomes. the fact is that a large percentage of people are ready for progressive policies, including economic ones. the number one issue that people say they voted on was the economy. obama laid out very clearly what he would do in that regard. people listened, and they liked it.

Another Adam - you took the words right out of my mouth. Bravo, yo! Obama has two things going for him: he knows what to say to get elected and he's black. yippee. personally, as a registered democrat (i voted for McCain by the way) I can't believe that this country was so hyped up to change history by electing the first black president that they all forgot to pay attention to what he was really saying. I guess that just goes to show the depth of laziness in our society that we can't simply go out and get the real answers to the issues no matter what your color or creed. It also goes to show just how biased the media is, both liberal and conservative. I personally think journalists should be held up on charges of purgery for printing any story, no matter how mundane, that isn't 100% fact and devoid of any political bias whatsoever. Considering this will never happen I'll keep doing my DUTY as an American and get as informed as possible before I vote in the next leader of the greatest country in the world. It makes me sick to think that 60% of a country was so blinded by "change" (load of shit) that they forgot to do what is RIGHT for EVERYONE in this country. But hey, it's only going to be 4 years of insane political and economic failures. no biggee.

Sarah: "End Already" didn't say anything about graffiti, that was Rampant and the comment was true. Rampant was right on about everything he/she's posted on this thread. If I knew who Rampant was I'd buy him/her a beer.

All I have to say is that I'm a republican and I threw my support behind McCain and he lost. I'm not going to be a bitter American though; I didn't particularly care for either candidate. However, I would have voted for a Clinton-Obama ticket over McCain-Palin had that been the choice.

Now that Obama is the President Elect I hope that he's able to do the job with all of the ability that he's been hyped to possess. I hope that he brings America the change that he's promised and that it's the type of change America needs. But first, I hope that all of the cross-party bickering and negativity of the last two years can be put to rest for a time and that the nation can come together in this truly historic time and support the leader that the people chose.

I just really hope that we don't become a government dependent socialists America in the process. Because a government big enough to give you everything you need is a government big enough to take it all away. Ref: Cuba.

I will agree that this is an historic event, but simply because America voted in a black President. And that's certainly pretty amazing.

Other than that, though, it's really just (neoliberal) politics as usual. A continuation of the neoliberalism of the past 20+ years. There won't be any 'change.' Obama is a good orator and is quite media-savvy. He has also spent the last year or more saying pretty much nothing and laying on the empty platitudes. On the other hand, the other guy sang songs about bombing Iran and picked a (potentially) corrupt religious zealot who is probably the only person in America with LESS political experience than Barack Obama as his running mate.

We heard a lot about change back in '92 when Clinton was elected. And then he stabbed organized labor in the back and forced NAFTA through congress, killed off universal healthcare, got America into foreign wars, and pretty much acted like a Republican.

Obama won't be any different. The differences between the two major parties are so minute that they must define themselves on 'wedge' issues like gun control, gay marriage, abortion, prayer in schools, etc.

So we now have Obama, which I guess means we can use the (inevitable) additional $1 or so increase to our minimum-wage salaries to pay for that abortion that will remain protected by the Constitution.

Joey, I agree with you wholeheartedly that this is a very historical time in our lives and we should soak it all in as much as we can. I think that anyone who just wants it to be over with and views it as nonsense really has their priorities all wrong.

Which brings me to part 2:

Grafitti is a lot more than "the use of spray paint and/or markers. if we are going to get all technical. Also, you obviously have a problem with knowing what is important and what is not. If all you can add to this conversation is "corrections" and other such "nonsense" then really you should take some quiet time alone and think about your priorities.

A factual error in the article. Graffiti was not born in the 80s. Graffiti as we know it (use of spray paint and or markers..etc) was actually born in the late 60s early 70s. Graffiti itself actually started with cavemen (not the ones from Geiko commericals though).

Von would say the whole thing was half empty, but every seat in the open sections was taken. Still the biggest political rally ever by at least double at that venue. Even when people pushed up closer the floor looked way more than half full the entire time.

Try telling us what he said today that you don't agree with. I will go first, John McCain while standing in the same spot said the fundamentals of the economy were strong. Then wall street collapsed in a way that the only way to save our economy was to bail it out with tax payer money we will have to pay back. The fundamentals are what you miss when you attack all the time and don't play with good intentions.

Everyone there pledged their allegience to the flag. The loudest I have ever heard it. The VTP rejects the idea of a one-religion state and all of those who promote it. That would include you. Dumb ass.

I have to agree with Rampant. I'll be casting my vote, as a registered democrat, for the blue team. I can't in good conscience vote for someone who's policies make no sense whatsoever. I spend a good portion of my day listening to both the left wing and the right wing media so that I get both sides of the story. Obama is going to send this country into a financial downward spiral like no one has ever seen. His policies are the exact opposite of Reagan's when he took office. Reagan took office in the middle of a real recession, a real financial crisis and he turned it around completely and kept it that way for the next 8 years. When Clinton took office he started in on universal healthcare. We see how good HMO's work, huh? Give me a break. "Take from the rich to give to the poor"?....That only works for Robin Hood. This isn't a fairy tale with happy endings of mulled wine, wenches and the crowned king's blessing. This is America's future. For those who already cast there vote, I applaud you for exercising your right as americans, though I may lament your choice. For those who are voting tomorrow, go get educated on the REAL issues.

the rally this morning was amazing. Obama was, of course, on his game, but what was really inspiring were the people at the rally. EVERYONE was having a great time. dancing to the music, doing the wave, chatting with each other. i've never been to an event with that many people where everyone was just so full of love and joy. this is truly a different campaign, and one i'm soooooo excited to get done with. tomorrow will be a wonderful day!

Barack Obama is the only logical choice for president. His views are well thought out and not from "the gut". He is willing to listen and incorporate disparate points of view. He will extricate us from the mess in Iraq. Hopefully he will invest in the economy and not shy away from spending.

When Clinton was first elected he inherited a deficit a little over 5% of the GDP. Obama is getting a deficit just over 3%. He has room to invest first and then start paying down the debt.

I already cast my vote during the early voting period for Barack Obama. Normally I shy away from public declarations on politics but this election is such a clear choice -- in my opinion -- and hopefully more Americans agree with us.
