Portland Saturday Market

Portland’s Saturday Market Draws 70K people a year.

I was looking though my news for the last couple of weeks and I found the biggest story of the month, but one of the least talked about: The Riverside Artist Market.

I’ve been hearing about this market for a while now, but it was never clear whether it would happen. As of last night, it’s a reality, the City Council approved it 14-0. I’m happy to see this overwhelming sign of approval. Having the City throw support behind a potentially transformative event isn’t just good for local artists, it’s good for the perception of Jacksonville.

Resolution expressing the city’s support for the creation of the Riverside Artists’ Market under the Fuller Warren Bridge. The resolution also encourages the city, and state departments of transportation and environmental protection, to collaborate on this effort. So we might see weekend trolley/buss service to the market. Not sure why the EPA would need to be involved, maybe because the market will be so close to the St. John’s River.

Portland Saturday Market

The Artist Market will be modeled after Portland’s Saturday Market (pictured) which was modeled after the Saturday Market in Eugene, Oregon. In structure it will resemble Portland’s market very closely with all items required to be hand made:

All of the arts and crafts must be hand-made, and the artist who produced the work will be present at the artists’ market. All art will reviewed by a jury, and only the finest quality of work will be exhibited at the artists’ market.

Portland Saturday Market

Portland’s Market was founded as a mutual benefit corporation, where the members share the cost and governance of the market, and keep all profits they receive from selling their items. It seems like the City will be handling cost and governance, so Jacksonville’s vendors may come out ahead.

And another thing, one of the times I went to the Portland market I bought some homemade beef jerky and a delightfully crappy wooden squirrel. There were all skill and creativity levels represented. There were intricate jewelry pieces next to children's paintings. RAP is going to blow it if they impose an endless amount of regulation. I know that rules titillate RAP,but the over abundance of them is also what aggravate we Riverside residents. There has to be:
No jury!
No rule eliminating co-ops by requiring all artists be present during the market .
No requirement for artist to buy insurance, that's the responsibility of the city.
The best artists I know wouldn't wast their time with such silliness.

I am very excited about the market but very disturbed by a jury deciding who should be allowed to sell. I think ANY artist should be allowed to present their wares as long as they are not profane. It is completely elitist and ludicrous that a grandma from the Presbyterian apartments would probably not be allowed to sell her plastic canvass tissue holders at the market. What snobs!!! Let the shoppers dictate who is desirable and who isn't, by their purchases.

This should be pretty sweet.We were pretty excited about the fact it will be outside, but not really thanks to Fuller Warren....we should build a bridge over the top of the St. Johns Town Center!

The storm water um feature is not part of the market site, which is pretty much finished. That will likely be an esplanade connecting the river/market to riverside park. The infrastructure is in place and very well designed(melody bishop). It has been a very long process for the team behind this lead by Dr Wood. It could be our mayors biggest accomplishment because this thing will change our city and it couldn't have come at a better time.

if this is going where i think it is, DOT and DEP will have to work together to relocate/redesign the stormwater retention system that is located at the proposed site...

I've been to that market and it's pretty incredible. I hope we can get that kind of turn out and support. It would be great for our city!

Its good to see wasted space under the expressway being used. Hopefully, this type of thinking will eventually make its way to the segment at Riverside Park.

wow. this sounds great. i'm happy to see that you have to apply to be involved. it would be terrible if the market was FULL of crap. i'd like to see younger artists being involved with this, rather than just marketable paintings that seem to dominate the sellable jacksonville art scene.
