Urban Jacksonville

UC closed roughly a month ago. they had a big blowout party. i agree about their coffee. not very good. they had some interesting bands every once in a while, but that’s about it.

I’m still bummed that Qdoba’s closed in 5 Points. No more inexpensive Tex-Mex in our area now. *pout*

Just wanted to point out that it is Charlottesville, VIRGINIA not North Carolina.

I liked Uncommon Grounds, a whole lot better that the Starbucks around the corner.

Uncommon Grounds is moving to Springfield and will be reopened there under the name of Undergrounds.

@adam I didn’t have any problem with the coffee. It was just totally inconsistent in lots of different ways.

Can always use a new burrito place or restaurant near my office.

Chipole’s alright but the tempeh burrito at Mossfire is much better than anything they have there.

@Joey – Looks like we made the same fruitless trip to UG this weekend. The only consistency I ever found there was the one “barista” who was always napping on the couch when I came in. :-) I had high hopes.

Chipotle over Mossfire, no way! Chipotle has the blandest burritos in my opinion and there menu has very little to offer.

Uj is back! Glad to have you back on the block. Happy for new retail heading to the hood and san Marco. Its going to be an interesting year.

After the front door was destroyed and the register was stolen, I can’t say I blame UG for closing down. Those aren’t the only reason’s they closed their doors, but that articulated the end for most of us regulars.

I went there much more for the atmosphere than anything else. I haven’t found anywhere else around Jacksonville where I could get a coffee and REALLY relax for a bit before I plunged myself back into my overly busy life.

UG was a heaven for those of us that needed a break and somewhere to feel like home away from home. Even mixed with any of its other flaws, it got that part right for a lot of us, so I’m going on record in saying thank you to Diane and everyone else that made that place what it was.

I look forward to finding Undergrounds up in Springfield someday soon and hope that I get to see all the people that made Uncommon Grounds what it was when that happens. Till then, I’m glad blogs like Urban Jacksonville can get the news out.

You can always tell a Jacksonvillian, b/c they actually like Mossfire Grill. Mossfire doesn’t even make fresh guacamole – how hard is that!?!?! Some fresh avocado onion, tomato, cilantro!?!? Mossfire’s comes out of a tub!!!!! This is good food to Jacksonville?!?!

Other than Burrito Gallery and Chipotle, the other 3 burrito places don’t even belong on such a list.

I’m not that surprised about UG either. The last time I went was a few months ago, and I got a large coffee for $3. $3!? I couldn’t believe it, and it wasn’t even very good.

Coffee aside, the atmosphere was okay, but always a little off-putting, and definitely not inviting. I never felt comfortable there, and tried to again and again but to no avail.

I’ll take Three Layers in Springfield any day – a true welcoming environment, clean, friendly, great baked goods, and the same mediocre coffee you can find anywhere else.

PS for really good coffee, get a french press from Starbucks. Beats everyone else hands down. As for the Burrito place… eh.

No prob JH. I was just saying I prefer Mossfire over Chipotle. I wonder if any on the list make guac from scratch?

we need another burrito place like we need another hot wok or nail spa. BG we sink that place in 12 months. I have been to Mossfire twice and both times the food was awful.

I’ll have to agree with Sam on needing another burrito place. Jax is overrun with the same old places to eat, no variety, although, I suspect this has more to do with the populous.

Either way, it’s a new place to try for lunch…

If you want good tacos and such, you need to leave those Tex-Mex chains alone and find a real Tequria on the southside. There’s a good one near Spring Park/Emerson and University/Beney. If there is no menu and little English, you know you found the real thing. Good traditional stuff.

I have always found pretty much all of Mossfire’s food to be very, very bland and uninteresting. A bit of a letdown, especially considering what you pay. I have eaten at Burrito Gallery only once, and my burrito wasn’t very good. But I would assume, based on all the positive comments, that was the exception rather than the rule.

I eat at the burrito every day and I find it remarkable except for the douche nozzles that tag the bathrooms. Up yours! Support all your restaurants especially the locals and decide for yourself.I’m not saying you shouldn’t voice your opinion. Let them rip. Just don’t let others decide what you like. Tastes are subjective. For instance I love rare tuna tacos from mossfire with extra hot chutney. Mmmm. With an ice cold beer. Huh? Oh yeah. Back to work.

seriously, the coffee there wasn’t any good. why is it so hard to make a great cup of coffee? I’d drive half way across Jax for a good cup. Peet’s, I beg you, open a shop in 5-points!!!!
