No one will ever get paid to cover art in this city folks. I hate to break it to you guys. I did extensive research on the art scene - rise and fall of it through the decades in a podcast series here: http://www.globatron.org/category/jaxarthistory and it seems it continually fails. I covered fifty or so shows, and did fifty or so local artists interviews and all I got was mostly negativity from the local scene. Then finally a final blow to my passion for this city was struck as two local contributors snuck in and deleted two years of their content and still to this day have yet to email me or contact me. These were close friends of mine I had thought. Celebrated birthdays together, etc.

This city wants culture but it is too tribal to grow culturally. As soon as someone attempts to do something positive they get badmouthed and stabbed in the back unless of course you've created your own tribe. Then your own tribe will support you. I think of this as a tribe. I'm glad you guys have each other.

I've had it with Jacksonville. To tell you the truth I feel for you guys because this city will never improve. We'll all be fifty years old before it's anywhere close to what you guys are wanting it to be. There are smaller cities in poorer states that have much more culture, etc. I mean we can stick around till we're fifty and then say finally they got it together, if it ever happens.

I tried for two years to help improve this art scene by documenting it and being at every show I could be at, and got nothing but heartache in return from the local art scene. I wish you all well. I'm sure someone will say something hurtful in response to this but I'm used to it by now.

Good luck Jacksonville.com. I really hope things go well for the paper as it would be a shame for all those employees to lose their jobs in this economy.

Great attempt Joey in outlining ways to improve the paper and help it stay afloat. Your passion for Jacksonville is inspiring and I wonder where all your energy comes from.

Also, Globatron has nothing to do with Jacksonville anymore. I'm sure a lot of you would be happy to know that. There's a Dear John Letter I wrote below. Congratulations to everyone who talked enough shit about me to abandon my efforts. You should all give each other a high five.

Keep it up Joey.

Start with JTA board members who meet every month or so. Alphabetically by first names. Probably not as much work as you would think. Put me down for an issue or rss feed. You've doubled in one day.

I just wish they'd do away with the "Top Criminalz" listing on jaxdotcom. It makes me cringe every time I see it (doesn't get more sensational than that) and makes me wonder what someone searching for info on Jacksonville would think when they come to the site. Say you're thinking above moving, or get a job offer, and there! on the home page! A drug dealer! On the LOOSE! Some of them are bad dudes, some aren't. But it just seems to give the city a bad impression. And I'll note that they seemed to take it down back when the Super Bowl came to town - wonder if that was by design? Obviously it's getting clicks or it wouldn't still be up and front and center. Which makes me more sad to think of all the fearful people out there who just have to know about all the criminalz running loose in their dangerous little city!

Adam, first, thanks for creating a lively discussion. What I was implying is you listed four papers who do an amazing job of covering the national and international news scene, so why re-create the wheel.

The Times-Union could never compete with them on coverage of national, much less international topics. The fact that each of those 4 papers is doing a great job is an indication to me that the TU should let them do what they do best and focus on local regional as you say later on.

I do see what you are saying and you are making your point well. I agree when you say "As the newspaper of the region, it has a duty to keep the citizenry informed." It is and it should.

I would much rather see a focus on regional, which you did not mention earlier, than national or international. Also, when I say more hyperlocal, I didn't mean all hyperlocal, just to clarify.

@skink it depends on if the news story was something I was passionate about. Let's say they were raising funds to form a transit beat that was a JTA watchdog. Would I contribute to that? Yes. I think it's circumstantial. Is it the best model, maybe not, but it's out of the box. That's why I included it.

No, Chad, I think we just misunderstand each other. I think it's perfectly ok for people to go to CNN. But assuming everyone will (and therefore not carrying national or international news in the local paper) is a mistake, in my opinion. I agree that the future is probably online. But that future isn't here yet, not for everyone. I don't think Jacksonville should (once again) handicap itself by acting like a small town when it's trying to be more than that. On another issue, I take exception to a LOT of the news reporting that is available to lots of Americans (CNN, FOX, MSNBC). Sure, there is news there... but it's also lots of fluff and lots of 'hard-hitting' opinion shows. Lots of commentary. And lots of dumbed-down stories being read by overly emotive newsreaders.

Adam W "Simply assuming that people will go to CNN for national or world news is sad"

Why is that sad? So a story breaks we should wait until the next day when The Times has printed a story on it?

You may have missed my point, if I want late breaking national news I'm going online to a large national source, CNN, The Onion, etc... all of us are posting comments ONLINE. The future of news is ONLINE.

I think my major issue with the TU isn't so much the use of wire stories... but the ones they choose to run! AP, UPI, Reuters, AFP, etc produce so much content every day. With such an abundance of copy, you'd expect a lot better stories in the paper. But you tend to get a lot of AP-written human interest stuff. Maybe this reflects the very conservative nature of the paper. I don't know. As for Folio, I tried reading a copy when I was in Jax recently and couldn't even finish Dennis Ho's self-aggrandizing 'report' on the Black Kids' US tour. I say 'report' because it was all about Dennis Ho, how he and the band are such good buddies (who've known each other since the dawn of time) and how HE gets to follow them on tour. Real enlightening stuff.
