Its about time! You have to love it when a little progress finally takes place. When the parking ordinance was revised in 2007, it looked like they would have been installed before last year. Better late than never.

Glad we can attribute the new digital meters directly (or indirectly) to the actions of Metro Jacksonville and their continued efforts to improve downtown. The article you sited starts out with:

It appears we've gone beyond venting frustrations.

Metro Jacksonville's plan also called for “smart meters,” which would allow shoppers to use credit cards instead of loose change to pay for parking.

I saw more digital meters along Laura Street across from the Library.

People should keep in mind that there is no such thing as “free” parking and that if you can develop a priced parking strategy that is convenient (debit cards/time flexibility) and predictable and equitable, than people will embrace it. In addition, think of all the wonderful “non vehicular” enhancements that can be funded through such a system.

I don't know details on individual meter costs but I hope so. I do know that the council set aside $500,000 for smart meters two years ago.

In DC they have park meters similar to this except instead of putting in one at every spot they put one per block. The machine spits out a ticket and you put it in the window of your car. It has all the same features as the individual one shown in the blog post. The single machine per block seems more economical than one for each spot.
