There were some great spaces available. Some of them need lots of work to be usable as a gallery but you can't beat the price for prime storefront locations.

I just found out about this today. I read an article that mentioned applications being due on 8/31. Do we need to have completed an application just to check out the available spaces? My dad and I have talked forever about finding some gallery space somewhere to rent, and this looks like it could be really cool.

yep. you got to find good alt funding too. selling your paintings and taking your cut and cutting in the facility/landlord can be tough and drive up prices. art sales don't pay rent. ask anyone. you have to find other sources, rent parties/cover charges for events, sponsors, grants (like its that easy, I know)...art in the age? that is a cool store. we have all those things here just not under one roof. reminds me of the reax store in tampa. we will get there. yep.

I totally agree. I'm hoping these open houses turn into gallery/studio spaces that can be sustainable. My point was that I hope these spaces can maintain themselves without the artists paying for the spaces month after month out of their own pocket.

I also believe more artists should trade their work if they are not selling it. The barter system works very well for me as an artists and I encourage other artists to give it a try.

On a side note I just got back from a trip to Philly and stopped by the flagship store for Art in the Age of Mechanical Production. http://www.artintheage.com/ I feel we could do something like this in Jacksonville.

@chad getting people to support and buy anything is a tough proposition in our macro-economic-condition, however for most people like me and people I am around spending money on really meaningful local things are the only non-sustenance purchases we make. Anthropologically speaking nothing makes me feel better or cooler than buying local art that one day my kids will thank me for handing down, like I do when my mom gives me some cool thing from her past. Some artists and crafts people make money at events like art walk and ram but those are mostly folks who have found things that people want to cherish as possessions at an accessible price. No easy feat but ultimately, I think, attainable. I also think that artists need to trade work more. Get some inventory out of the studio and bring in and expose some compatriots. Anyway been thinking about it lately obvs. Keep working duval.
