Today at 11:00 a team of developers announced plans to redevelop the huge patch of downtown Jacksonville. It will include the historic Barnett Bank, the Laura Street Trio buildings and possible an entirely new building to be constructed next to the trio, seen in the rendering above.

MetroJacksonville had a chance to meet with a member of the design team tonight. Let me tell you – if this happens, it truly could be the project that gives the core of downtown the kick in the rear it needs. We were able to see some of the architectural renderings, and they are truly fantastic. It treats the intersection of Laura and Adams as the true center of downtown, and makes it once again, the focal point of downtown.

Jacksonville.com has the story on the website Team hopes revamped trio trumps Jacksonville’s downtown reputation and here are the main points:

  • The restoration would target a block of Laura Street flanked by the 18-story Barnett Bank Building and the Laura Street Trio: the two-story Marble Bank Building; 10-story Bisbee Building; and 11-story Florida Life Building.
  • The project would have about 120 hotel rooms and 137 apartments, plus a variety of restaurants and street-level stores.
  • The plan for restoring the Barnett Bank Building envisions a mix of hotel rooms and apartments. The 120 hotel rooms would be called The Bank Hotel.
  • Developers would build an apartment building in the same block as the Laura Street Trio. The new building would have a sleek modern style to create a desirable contrast, they said.

On June 24th Urban Jacksonville Weekly will have guest Steve Lovett, partner for Ervin Lovett Miller, a Jacksonville architectural firm working for the development team.
