Updates and Clarifications on Conmoto

  • The special guest isn’t Black Kids, Ian Ranne (Triclops I) DJing local music between the sets and the Troupe Shoot Dancers performing with Lazerstar.
  • The Art Show will be upstairs at Burrito Gallery from 11p – 1a, Three Olive martinis will be free for of-age art lovers.
  • Afterparty – The official afterparty on Friday is at Birdies. TSI has said they will let ticketholders in to TSI for free that night.
  • The official afterparty on Saturday night is at The Pearl. It will be DJed by the musicians from Conmoto.
  • Beforeparty – Dinner with the bands. Bands will receive a 20% discount at Burrito Gallery on Friday and Saturday. Festers are invited to come hang with the bands from 4 – 630 both nights before the shows start.

Worst picture ever, but it’s all good. This was not our worst show ever, probably one of our best. Not only do we talk about Conmoto, we also talk about FRAM or Farmers at RAM and Bikevemberfest at RAM.

The Farm to Table Tour was created to highlight farmers markets around the country and the benefits they offer their communities, and to celebrate the food produced by each market’s farmers and vendors.

This event will pair local chefs with local farmers to prepare special tastings showcasing their partner farm’s fresh ingredients and visitors will have the opportunity to sample the chefs’ creations while also learning more about the market vendors, their products, and how to buy and eat seasonally. Chefs will serve samples from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Here are the participating chefs:

  • Michael McKinney of Chew Restaurant
  • Eddy Escriba of Uptown Market
  • Nick Robson of Eleven South
  • Sam Efron of Taverna
  • Eric Fritsche of Pastiche
  • Richard Nunn of News 4 Jax
  • Damon Burch of Biscottis
  • Brian Vandenburg of Burrito Gallery
  • Brian Siebenschuh of Orsay
  • Floyd Slyman of Café Du Marche
  • Rodrick Smith of Sweet Pete Catering
  • Tom Gray of Bistro AIX

Taverna San Marco

Sam Efron of Taverna, one of the chefs, will be a guest on Urban Jacksonville Weekly Tuesday night at 5:30. We’ll talk about Sam’s new San Marco restaurant, his involvement in the the Farm to Table Tour and the importance of buying and eating seasonally. Read Taverna reviews on Yelp.

In addition to free tastings, visitors will have the opportunity to select potted culinary herb plant starts at the Mobile Garden Highlander Hybrid, and can also enter for a chance to win a unique culinary prize package. Toyota will also provide interested market goers with the opportunity to take a ride in the 3rd Generation Prius or a 2009 Highlander Hybrid and take home a John Boos cutting board as a thank you gift.

Toyota is dedicated to using eco-friendly materials throughout the tour and will be purchasing carbon credits through TerraPass to offset the impact of the tour’s carbon footprint. In addition, to further support the market, Toyota is making a financial donation to the Riverside Arts Market, LLC, the organization that brings the Riverside Arts Market to life each week.

Reactions to Mayor Peyton’s Shift to Downtown and Riverfront Projects

Here’s a collection of reactions to the Mayor’s Thursday press conference announcing his plans for the final two years of office.

Jacksonville mayor calls for salary freeze
This was also mentioned in the press conference but received no questions or comments during the QA with reporters and business leaders.

Chief among the city’s financial woes is the pension contribution, which Peyton said will cost taxpayers $275,000 a day.

Mayor John Peyton: Investing in Jacksonville’s Future via Metro Jacksonville who also live blogged yesterday’s announcements

Mayor John Peyton’s complete presentation “Investing in Jacksonville’s Future” outlines his focus for downtown in his final two years in office.

Peyton shifting priority to downtown, riverfront

He didn’t have cost estimates for the wide array of projects, which are still conceptual. They range from developing a downtown gateway from the Brooklyn area to extending the Northbank and Southbank riverwalks.

Peyton’s downtown vision has considerable potential

Big dreams? Sure. But some of the work could begin now with money that had been set aside for public improvements in Brooklyn, where proposed development is off the table for now because of the bad real estate market.

One Jacksonville Politics blog contributor is not buying Peyton’s plan

The recently released Council Auditor’s report identifies millions of dollars in funding shortfalls (6.7 million of them to be exact) and the Mayor wants to revamp Metropolitan Park and Friendship Park?

O Snap, Let’s Market The Riverside Arts Market

View Comments

Tony Allegretti is know for innovative marketing, ArtWalk anyone? The beauty of his marketing is it seems so damn effortless. He probably doesn’t know he struck on a brilliant idea this weekend at the Riverside Arts Market. Then again, maybe he does, and that’s why he was hired to be the Director.

Tony took pictures of booths with his phone and uploaded them to his photoblog O Snap, calling out booth numbers and highlights of the market as he snapped (Note: Tony needs a new phone with a better camera).

This is a great way to highlight and recommend individual vendors. Highlighting one vendor over another is definitely not his style, but you get the idea.

Next he should tie his photoblog to his RAM Director twitter account (I know how to do this by the way…). Snapping photos and posting descriptions and booth numbers directly to Twitter. Anyone following RAMDirector on Twitter would have a director’s eye view of the best and most savory at the market, at least for that particular weekend.

Checking tweets from your phone at the market, hitting up booths you might not have normally ventured to. Who else would you rather get recommendations from than the RAM Director, who’s been there every week and knows what’s new and what should not be missed. It’s a great way to market the market.

Tony, when you need a guest curator for the day, let me know. I’m totally down.

If you have some time write a letter to the editor of the Times Union. You can submit your letters via an online form here: http://www.jacksonville.com/opinion/submit_a_letter_to_the_editor. It’s just as easy – probably even a bit easier – than writing your letters to City Council. You could even submit the same text you sent to City Council!

Remember: the crucial point is not that Waste Management is a bad, evil company. They aren’t, necessarily. The trouble is that this process is indicative of a bad approach that’s outdated and does not accomplish what government should. We’re asking the city to open up the bidding process, give us access to the details of that bidding process, and accept the best deal. If that’s with Waste Management, then that’s great. Let’s actually find out. It wouldn’t be hard!

Introducing the Riverside Artist Market

View Comments

Riverside Artist Market

I talked about the Riverside Artists Market (RAMarket) last year. It’s a huge all-weather market under the canopy of the Fuller Warren Bridge on Riverside Avenue. As the opening of the market approaches they are looking for input:

This Saturday, January 24th, 10am – 11:30am, the RAM Committee will host a workshop for interested artists, food vendors and farmers. The purpose of this workshop is to receive feedback on the market guidelines (including market layout, booth assignment policy and cost structure, Market policies and procedures).

If you plan on going please RSVP by Today to Teresa Fish at teresa@riversideavondale.org if you plan to attend. I would go ahead and RSVP even if it is past the date of just show up.

The meeting will be held at the First Guaranty Bank Building at 760 Riverside Ave, across the street from the market site. The meeting will start at 10am.

If you want to listen to more on the Riverside Artists Market it’s a topic of the new weekly radio show Urban Jacksonville Weekly.
