Jacksonville Street Art update

Street art in Jacksonville seems to be on the rise again. In the past few weeks there have been an explosion of posters, stickers, throw-ups and murals. For about 6 months now things have been really slow on the street art front. A poster here, a tag there. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe kids are tired of getting arrested.

Here are some of the highlights. See all the street art flicks from the last week.

Brooklyn This style of poster has been pooping up all over Springfield, Downtown and Riverside. This person has been putting in some work.

Jacksonville Street Art

Springfield A steady presence, throw-ups and a mural that just won’t stay the same.

madhatter+(2)

There are two pretty shweet events going on in Jacksonville tonight. One in 5 Points and one in Brooklyn, a 2 minute drive or bike ride from 5 Points. This will make your decision on what to do tonight so easy, because you can do both!

I don’t know how this one got by me but thanks to Tony Allegretti for pointing it out. The second edition of 5 Points’ First Friday will showcase The Madhatter’s Tee Party at Anomaly, 6-9PM! One of a kind tees designed by top local artists in Jacksonville: Ali Fuder, Tonya Lee, Brian Gray, Jimmy Pines, Kelly Eason, Levi Ratliff, Marisa Carta, Molly Riefler! Whaaaaat!!? Awesome.

After that you can catch the First Fridays $5 Flick, which is Goonies. Doors open @ 9:15. BYOB and a blanket and/or lawn chair as there is no seating in the theater! “It’s our time down here!” “Chuuuunk!”

Cross-PolliNATION

After you buy your one of a kind tee, scoot over the Jane Gray Gallery in Brooklyn (map) for Brittni Wood’s first solo show Cross-PolliNATION. This will definitely be the highlight of my evening.

Brittni is one on Jacksonville’s hottest young artists and this is your chance to get one of her paintings before she blows up and you can’t afford her any more. Free beer and wine at this one folks, what else could you ask for?

Art Show: Cross-PolliNATION

front

Urban Jacksonville contributor Brittni Wood will be having her first solo show this Friday, November 2, at the Jane Gray Gallery in Brooklyn. There will be free beer and wine for the opening reception.

Cross-PolliNATION an exhibition of Brittni Wood’s abstract paintings. Wood’s paintings are heavily influenced by social issues of today, with an emphasis on ideas of religion, sexuality, and gender roles. “My work is forced into a slue of contradictions” says Wood.

Wood’s paintings entertain opposite ends of the spectrum, from gestural and dirty to hard and graphic. This combination is what interests her most, while also inspiring a mixed media approach to her paintings.

Most of all Brittni is an awesome artist. I have four of Brittni’s paintings at my house and hope to pick up some more Friday night. Come check out one of Jacksonville’s hottest new artists Friday night.

Cross-PolliNATION will be on exhibit 11/2/07 thru 12/3/07
643 Edison Avenue, one block off Riverside Avenue (map)

Dreaming of Black Mountain

Dreaming of Black Mountain

Jane Gray Gallery (who has a new website) is having an opening on Saturday September 22nd. Dreaming of Black Mountain - New works by Kurt Polkey and Morrison Pierce is free to the public. There might be free wine and beer there.

Dreaming of Black Mountain details on ExperienceJax

This gallery is a pretty nice venue for art. High ceilings, cool Brooklyn location, lots of art hipsters to look at. I’d recommend this show if you don’t have anything to do Saturday night. If you get there late, you’ll probably miss out on any free beer/wine/apps. I did see some people BYOB last time. If you’re going that way keep it on the QT, so you don’t get pegged as a rabble rouser.

Those last two sentences were pretty funny.

Corn in Brooklyn

Double J, Josh Jubinksy, posted this earlier this week:

A while back I posted about the corn field on the corner of Park and Forest. Well I met the farmer, Brett, and his son, Chris, yesterday. He uses the nearby building as a art studio. And that old florist shop? His wife is planning on opening a mexican restaurant in that space. He talked about bands playing, and movie projections on the side of his studio. When I get back into town, I’ll be talking with him alot more and letting you know all about it.

Damn Brooklyn is cool again. Well it was already on it’s way. With the access to the Northbank Riverwalk and art shows at Jane Grey how could it miss? One thing Brooklyn will need is some dense residential housing. Right now much of the property on this small strip of real estate between Downtown and Riverside is industrial. That may change with the much anticipated Brooklyn Park development and the possibility of JTA running the trolley service from Downtown into Riverside along Riverside Avenue.

In the future Brooklyn could quite possibly be on of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city.
