Shorstein pushes for gym inquiry
Now that the State Attorney is looking into the St. Timothy Church gym deal everyone from the city council President to the church’s pastor is running from this thing as fast as they can.
council President Kevin Hyde said he will ask his colleagues to repeal the initiative because the church’s pastor told the city he was no longer interested in the money.
Newbill, the church’s pastor, declined comment Friday. But Councilman Reggie Fullwood, who belongs to the church and advocated for the project, said he spoke to Newbill and he planned to have a news conference Monday to say the deal was off.
After receiving a quite a few complaints about the council’s decision to finance a 16,000-square-foot gym on land owned by First Timothy Baptist Church, Shorstein will launch a grand jury investigation today.
The investigation will last for 6 months and might even issue criminal indictments. While we don’t think it will go that far, we are glad to hear the community still has a voice.
