One thing Jack mentioned in the interview, that I did not pick up on, is he has a few professional video-types who are eager to work with local bands to produce music videos for the contest. Send your band’s info to jdiablo@eujacksonville.com. If they like your stuff, they might be willing to offer their services.

I understand quite a few people have seen this video, so re-posting here is just to close the loop of people who will be interested to see it, but haven’t.

This is part of new interview series for Urban Jacksonville so keep an eye out for more. We’re taking recommendations for who to interview next if you have suggestions.

Dennis Eusebio came to me a couple months ago with an idea to shoot a series of videos for Urban Jacksonville. This aligned perfectly with my assertion that 2010 would be the year Jacksonville moved beyond text and branched out into audio and video.

We moved this trend along with the Urban Jacksonville Weekly podcast so I was excited to have Dennis work on this video interview series.

This piece stands by itself as a testament to everything that is fun and good in the city. I would love to see Downtown Vision or the Jacksonville Convention and Visitors Bureau use this video as a promotional tool for promoting city life.

Please enjoy the hi-res versions on Vimeo or Facebook and share with a friend next time they say Jacksonville is boring, lame, uninteresting, etc.

Tomorrow, February 25th, the Boys & Girls Club will announce it’s annual Youth of the Year competition winner. This year’s four nominees will represent Springfield, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach and the Westside (Ramona Boulevard).

I sat with Antwon Smith, the Springfield nominee, at 3 Layers and chatted for a bit. Antwon consistently surprised me with his answers and composure. Very smooth indeed.

Antwon will receive a $1,000 scholarship for being a local nominee and the local winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the opportunity to move on to the state-level competition. The Youth of the Year competition will culminate with the national winner participating in a special White House ceremony with President Obama this fall.

Nominees are evaluated based on academic merit, obstacles to overcome, and community service.

This is a quick post to point you to an interview I did with Ben LaMothe on Urban Jacksonville’s hyperlocal-ness. Ben says:

Hyperlocal as a concept has always intrigued me. Where I’m from, there isn’t much hyperlocal news presence. Lots of newspapers, but not much that is uniquely online-only. But since I will soon be re-locating to Jacksonville, FL, I decided to have a look at what kind of hyperlocal blogging happens. I was pleased to come across a few lively sites.

He went on say some other nice stuff about me and Urban Jacksonville. Thanks to Ben for doing the interview. Here’s some more about Ben who will be arriving in Jacksonville soon via the UK. He’s a postgraduate student at City University London, his immediate background is in journalism.

More recently I have begun to work in the fields of social media marketing, media blogging and web development. I am currently a junior associate at the corporate PR and marketing consultancy Glasshouse Partnership, where my primary role is devising web, social media and blogging strategy for corporate and individual clients.

I sat down with Varick Rosete, the President of AIGA Jacksonville to talk about the Always Summer Poster Show / Fundraiser.

Participants are asked to pick their favorite summer song and turn it into a piece of art in poster form. A live local DJ will be performing the songs compiled from the artists’ selections to set the tone for the night! Participating designers will have the chance at some killer prizes by winning Jax Choice awarded by popular vote. You don’t have to be a member to come have some fun!</blockquote

I'm a a strong believer in the concept that graphic design can change the face of a city. Good design can raise a city up to the next level visually and brand-wise. Listen to Varick and I talk about the mission of the AIGA and the local Jacksonville Chapter.

I've known Varick for the past couple of years. We worked together at nGen Works, where we found out we had the same Meyers-Briggs personality type. He's a rad dude and awesome designer.

I first met Arturo in the streets of Jacksonville where I noticed their distinctive designs over and over. Shortly after that I received and email from them, followed by a package in the mail with tshirts and stickers. I finally met them in person at the Partisan the Sea poster show. They’re an awesome group who make quality clothes so I wanted to spread the word.

Who is Arturo Clothing and what’s up with the name?
Arturo Clothing is a underground movement based around the Jacksonville street scene. The name was inspired from a small bundle of joy who we befriended at a local summer art camp.

What types of clothing are you making. What are you planning to make?
We basically make clothes for everyday use. Things like tshirts, bags, and beanies….because everyone wears clothes.

Where can I buy Arturo?
Well you can’t really buy Arturo himself, but you can buy our clothes at Anomaly in Five Points, Artwalk the first Wednesday of every month, and we will be launching an online store early next year.

You guys are currently using a lot of insect symbolism in your clothes. Is there any meaning behind that?
Well, our product isn’t necessarily based around bugs, but around the pests of society.

What would you say distinguishes Arturo from other local clothing brands
We make everything at our house, all of our images are original, and we only print on the highest quality of shirts. For instance our screens are hand crafted instead of the popular photo emulsion process that most local clothing companies use.

You say on your myspace all your shirts are hand screened. Why did you choose to screen shirts yourself instead of outsource it to a digital printer?
We are a diy company. We do EVERYTHING ourself.

Why do you choose to use American Apparel instead of another brand of shirt to screen on?
American Apparel makes the highest quality fitted tshirt that we can get our hands on.

What is your next big project or promotion coming us?
Well coming up quick we have our booth at the Art Walk. Big event wise we are hoping to put together something along the lines of a fashion show, and have urban jacksonville be part of it!

Last night Byron King from Globatron came down to the Churchwell Building for a preview of tomorrow’s Partisan the Sea Political Poster show. In addition we successfully tested a system to stream (via the Internet) and project (on the wall) Friday’s Presidential debate.

If the debate goes down, we’ll do our best to show it to you. However, a successful test and actually getting the debate to stream on Friday are two different things, but we’re hopeful.

We also hung most of the art last night and put up our (much) larger window posters, seen below.
