Baker Act

Today I have a featured article from Lola Lariscy of Cerulean’s Love of Music. From time to time Lola will be writing about music for Urban Jacksonville. Her first article is about a local band named Baker Act.

No, They Have Nothing To Do With Baking
But Somehow Beer and Shout Detergent Figure In

When my friend Cheryl at work (usually referred to as “Cheryl” by her close friends) let me hear the fabulous demo by a local band called Baker Act, my first question was to ask her if they had a website. They don’t (yet), but they have a Myspace, which means I can hear the songs again and learn more about the band. For instance, I’ve learned that they formed in mid-2005, they’ve had a few line-up changes, and their main influence is beer (ahhh…I knew I felt a deep connection…)

Copies of their demo are available when they play live (or by mail–just message the band for information), but you can hear it on their Myspace. Their type of music isn’t easily labeled–“Ignorance Is Bliss” and “Psycho Chick” are closer to punk rock (with the emphasis on rock) than the other two. This rock is more Sleater Kinney and The Donnas than your average modern rock.

When it’s not rock, though, it leans toward the atmospheric, slow build-up of Siouxsie Sioux or Concrete Blonde. “The Story of Faye” builds gradually, as if the guitar is climbing out of a bank of heavy fog (or the place where it passed out drunk from too much Red Stripe). Like ye olde Bauhaus, (and some Cure songs, too) the guitar/bass intro is deliberately slow and methodical, creating tension until the vocals pick up the dynamic. The song then explodes with all the force and urgency expected from a song about being put in a mental institution.

“Institution Girl” also starts off slow, gothic and introspective, but lyrically and musically, it’s a little less despairing than the other similarly-themed song. It speaks to the subject, instead of from the subject’s perspective; therefore the anger, though still there, isn’t the focus. This is more a love letter to the girl in the institution, rather than a rally cry against the institution.

Baker Act will undoubtedly be better known for their two songs “Psycho Chick” and “Ignorance Is Bliss”. All of the songs are equally good, but these two are more “in your face” and consistently loud, as opposed to the other more subtle, layered tracks. These two are more likely to be remembered by drunk frats the next day.

“Psycho Chick” most definitely has the funniest lyrics (“I’ll be your stain, so shout me out!” and “I’m moody as hell, but I’m not in jail”). I asked the singer and songwriter Danielle where the “shout me out” lyric came from and she said it was inspired by a cleanliness-obsessed former girlfriend who always had shout wipes with her. Heh–must be the ultimate shout-out for the ex, then (pauses for awkward, forced laughter). “Ignorance Is Bliss” is the most straight-up rock song. It definitely has the American Punk feel of 70′s New York and CBGBs, with a bit of early Hole (before the massive bank accounts and rights disputes overshadowed Courtney Love’s music)

Danielle and Marz (the drummer) are the only two original members. Elizabeth came on as bass player after a few misses with other bassists. Finding the guitarist became easier after they found out that Elizabeth’s brother Rudy played. They waited for his tenure with the military to end, and they had a complete band.

I asked Danielle why “scarf magician” was listed underneath her picture on the band’s page. Sadly she doesn’t do magic tricks with scarves or make origami scarf creatures. She likes to play with scarves on stage and that’s how she got the nickname. I guess it’s better than playing with fire or knives on stage…I mean, I’m sure she’d be good with them, but I’d be a little hesitant to be in that front row if she did. Each member has a personal Myspace account, accessible from Baker Act’s page. I now know that Elizabeth really likes horror movies and The Muppets and that Rudy trained to be a nurse.

Baker Act (fittingly, a term referring to being involuntarily institutionalized) plays regularly in Jacksonville and other cities in Florida. November 17th they’ll be in St. Pete, and on Dec 1st they’re playing The Pit here in Jax. They’ve recently played shows at The French Quarter and Fuel Coffeehouse.

Biblioklept’s scary books I-IV

Bunnicula!

Mmmwwwwuuuhhaahahaha!

Its time to take a look at a bombastic new blog Biblioklept. From what I gather this blog is written by a teacher from one of our fine Duval County High Schools, but hey Mr./Mrs. Biblio, correct me if I am wrong. How fortunate we are to have a teacher who’s so passionate enough about the subject he/she teaches.

Biblioklept describes itself like this:

Books I pinched, picked up, procured, purloined, pirated; books I absconded with, filched, fingered, lifted; books loaned to friends never to be returned. Books I’m reading, have read; books I like, love; books I think you should read. Stolen writers. Robbed texts. Hm. Haw. Yes!

Excellent. Good example for impressionable youngsters? Maybe not…

So why talk about Biblioklept today? He/she doesn’t write about downtown or any urban areas. No, but they do have a 4-part series on scary books which is perfect for today.

Scary Books – Part I Grendel, Macbeth, Bunnicula
Scary Books – Part II From Hell
Scary Books – Part III Scary Stories from Poe and Kafka
Scary Books – Part IV What books scared you?

Main Street Bakery. New and improved

There has been a lot of chatter on the SPAR message board the past few days about the Main Street Bakery opening. Here is a review from Daniel Blanchard:

Ok, we went by MSB tonight for dinner.

The food is equal to, or maybe a little better than it was before. It looks like they are trying to get away from the whole “sandwich shop” deal, but realize that’s what most people know them for.

I had the Springfield Burger, Jacq had the Chicken Club, and the kids had a hamburger and a hot dog. They have a section of the menu named after Springfield Locals, which is cool.

They seem to have focused on their beer selection. Lots of beers I don’t know the first thing about, which means the more cultured beer crowd might like it… or, I know nothing of beer, the later of which is most likely true.

I like the way its set out now more than before. I also like the chalk board walls. Fun for kids and drunken adults…

Victor had us sample some cactus salad while we were there… It was tasty.

For the breakfast crowd, it looks like they are doing the breakfast all day deal. Sadly, the day doesn’t start until 10. That means those of you who liked breakfast there will have to make it a brunch.

I also was forced to try some chicken wings (by Mark)… Not really my cup of tea, but then I was already full, so I may not have been a good judge.

All in all, it’s a nice little place, worth a gander to see if it’s up your alley.

Here is some additional information from the owner James Huntress:

[The website should be online] sometime next month. It will have our events and menu posts with pictures of past and present [events] as well. Come see us Friday night and enjoy the music. We are pet friendly as well.

So we have:

  • Pet friendly
  • Breakfast served all day (starting at 10:00am)
  • Interesting beer selection
  • Chicken wings
  • Live music

Damn, that sounds pretty sweet. I know where I will be eating the next time I head out for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And no suction cups in my mashed potatoes! Ha ha ha, a little inside joke for a few people.

Review: Club Paris Jacksonville

Club Paris opening night

Check out my video from the Club Paris VIP opening

Overall Club Paris was disappointing. Let me follow up this sentence by telling you I’m not big on booty shakin’ clubs. Unlike Fiddy, you won’t find me in tha club, bottle full of ‘bub. I agree with the Mark Woods assessment of Club Paris, I kept thinking of all the other places in town I’d rather be than Club Paris. I also want to give a big thanks to Tyrone for getting me a Heineken at the bar when I just couldn’t get the bartenders attention. That being said lets get to it.

The first thing you have to do is play this video in background as you are reading this review. I’m In Love With a Stripper is my pick for official song of the evening.

I arrived around 9:40 and the Landing was pretty dead, which was my first surprise. I really expected there to be a line of beautiful people waiting to get in. My next surprise came when I encountered no resistance getting into Club Paris. I was wearing Jeans, my fanciest Mossimo sport coat (from Target) with a blue American Apparel 5-button polo. That’s about as South Beach as I get. I was sure it wouldn’t be nice enough to get me in the club, but I had no problem.

My next surprise was no inspection of my messenger bag. I walked in with a bag full of camera’s and notepads, but for all they knew it could have been guns and knives. In my opinion door security was a bit lax. I expected a cursory inspection of my bag, but there was none of that.

On to the bar because it’s free drinks until 12:00. I am hoping I see someone I know, because my plans to do video interviews are shot due to the mind-numbing bass and complete lack of light. The next thing I notice is the heat. My jacket comes off after about 15 minutes.

I started walking around, snapping pictures and pretty much poking my head into any area I could access. The only place I wasn’t able to access was the VIP area upstairs. This is where all the fancy, expensive furniture was. The VIP area was also the only place with seats, no lounging at Club P, only booty shakin.

After about 15 minutes of walking around I was pretty much over Club Paris so I packed it in to head home. I’m really not the clubbing type and I was looking forward to getting home, sitting in the AC and cracking a beer. I was curious to see what Dan Blanchard thought of Club Paris so I gave him a call. He was able to convince me to not go home and to have a few more drinks.

After about 6 drinks Club Paris starts to get a little more fun. Even the Mayor is shakin his ass on the dance floor. Thinking back on the night the Mayor was pretty much the only celeb I saw while I was there.

As we approached 12:00, the end of free drinks and my experience at Club Paris, the floors started getting slippery around the bar area. Mmmm. I decided to hit up the bathroom before taking off and gross!! no soap in the bathroom. Seriously. Paris Hilton was no where to be seen, she was partying in France this weekend.

Check out all my pictures from the Club Paris opening.

What are other people saying about the Jacksonville Film Festival?

Comments Off

I’ve already written two posts on the Jacksonville Film Festival this morning and I am tired of typing out the whole name, so from now on I’m abbbreviating, JFF.

Do you want to track what other people are writing about the JFF around the web in real time? Well Urban Jacksonville has just hooked you up. Check out the Technorati search I set up for the JFF.

If you are really savvy you can subscribe to the RSS feed and be notified instantly when some writes something about the JFF. I also set up a Flickr photo search for the JFF. So far there aren’t any pictures on Flickr of the JFF

nOSH: a review

Henrietta’s has gone from a mama’s kitchen, to a swank, West Elm decorated/hip spot to eat in Springfield. And guess what? The food rocks! Seriously, this is not a sugar-coated restaurant review because I live in Springfield and I want people to spend money in my hood.

It was Friday night, the second day of operation, and I ordered the Salmon, the Filet and the cheese course.

The cheese was brie with field greens, yum. The salmon was well cooked and flavorful. The same goes for the filet. So I opened the box that holds my filet and it is all sliced up! WTF, but it’s good! I asked them to cook it medium and it was perfect.

Even though I got everything to-go I checked out the plating on the dishes and they were beautiful. The chef comes from St Augustine, where he was the kitchen manager at the Columbia restaurant.

The prices perfect. The problem, I am still hungry. The portions were a bit too small. I learned later that weekend that I was supposed to order two dishes. I guess I forgot the definition of nosh. That brings the price per person up from $8-10 to about $20 per person for a decent meal. So maybe the prices aren’t so perfect, who cares the food is good.

restaurant review: guthrie’s

guthrie's

We went to the grand opening of Guthrie’s Golden Fried Chicken Fingers yesterday. We will start by saying Guthrie’s is none too special and it really doesn’t distinguish itself from the other three chicken joints in the area. Having said that there is a certain nostalgia in their low-tech menu and simplified eating options.

We ordered a “Plate” for about 6.00 (drink not included). The Plate is made up of five chicken fingers, about as big as your middle and index fingers together. The chicken fingers are really good. They are more Chic-fil-a than Popeye’s in terms of breading and taste. Next up, “just good cole slaw”, meaning it’s neither bad or amazing. One “butter dunked” piece of toast, most likely a butter substitute, which we could not in good conscious finish eating. Crinkle-cut fries rounded out the meal which Guthrie’s delivered hot and fresh. This is oh-so important so they do get a plus for that.

We said earlier “Guthrie’s does nothing to distinguish themselves…”, well they do and in comes in the form of their “special pepper-mayo”. This is not the official name we just call it that. We are not normally big fans of mayonnaise-based dipping sauces for our chicken, but this is something else. You should definitely give it a try.

In the end we probably won’t be going back to Guthrie’s. The only other item on their menu is a chicken sandwich and fries. We will stick with Chic-fil-a, who has better cole slaw and better dipping sauces.
