The Gallery Group at The Art Institute of Jacksonville Presents Dustin Harewood’s Recent Portraits Exhibition

Thursday, February 11, 2010 from 5 PM to 7 PM

“For the past six months I have worked on a show of portraits. All information that I have deemed unnecessary has been removed. The result is an isolation and examination of the most important and expressive part of the human body: the head,” said Harewood. “The people I have chosen to draw have all fascinated me at one time or another. Some are well known celebrities while others are local artists, who in my opinion should be considered just as important,” added Harewood.

Pancakes at Uptown Market

I can eat breakfast three times a day. Morning, noon and night. Eggs, pancakes, bacon, coffee, lots of coffee. Here’s my list of places to eat breakfast in Jacksonville that are not Cracker Barrel.

Please note, this is not comprehensive and only lists places in the urban core where I like to eat. These are also in no particular order. Feel free to add your own picks, wherever they might be in the city in a comment on Facebook or on Twitter with the hashtag #jacksonvillebreakfast.

Uptown Market in Springfield

Google Review » Yelp Review

Uptown Market is Springfield’s newest breakfast spot. Breakfast Sandwich with Hashbrowns (shown) $4.95. Seriously.

Gina’s Deli in 5 Points

Google Review » Yelp Review

The bad reviews on Gina’s Deli are misleading. You can get an awesome breakfast special for 3.99. Eggs, grits, bacon and toast. This is greasy diner food, just keep your expectations in check.

Cool Moose Cafe in Riverside

Google Review

IMage compliments of Metro Jacksonville

Here is an excerpt from a review on Metro Jacksonville:

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into a space with 2 rather good sizes rooms full of people. People playing scrabble, reading, talking and eating. They offer an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, but not to the point of being overwhelming. I also had no idea they offer some decent beers on draft (Redhook IPA and more), wine and morning-time cocktails.

Biscotti’s in Avondale

Google Review » Yelp Review

Quiche, grits and fruit at Biscotti’s

Biscotti’s is probably the most upscale of this group and the one I frequent the least. However, you can always get a table at Biscotti’s when the wait list is 40+ minutes at the next place, The Fox. When I say upscale, the cost for breakfast is $$ while the rest of the places I mention in this post are $.

The Fox in Avondale

Google Review » Yelp Review

Get to The Fox early on the weekends to miss the local rush. Don’t go at prime breakfast time unless you’re cool with chilling until a table is available.

At least while you’re waiting, you can have some complimentary coffee on the sidewalk. I think The Fox is more about tradition than good food. The Fox has solid breakfast for a good price, great biscuits and local art on the walls.

San Marco Deli in San Marco

Google Review » Yelp Review

When I worked in San Marco this was a go-top place for a bacon, egg and cheese in a pita. Above average breakfast for the price and much faster breakfast service than lunch service. (hint, hint). Check out the breakfast menu. I don’t think they are open on the weekends.

Metro Diner in San Marco

Google Review » Yelp Review

Metro Diner is also mobbed by local San Marco residents on the weekend so bring a paper and some patience. On weekdays you can expect faster seating so maybe that’s a good time to try it. Metro Diner is my second choice for breakfast right after Uptown Market.

I’m promoting three events this week of which I’ll either be attending or participating in. I’ll start with Friday and the Urban Jacksonville + Thought & Theory Mixtape party, then move to Thursday’s Lightboxing event at Refresh Jacksonville and work my way back to Tuesday’s Urban Jacksonville Weekly with guest Terry Lorince of Downtown Vision.

Urban Jacksonville + Thought & Theory Mixtape party at the Burrito Gallery w/ Economy of Comedy hosted by Nick Costanza

I’ve talked Tony into letting me Dennis and I host these parties once a month at the Burrito Gallery (thanks Tony!). It gives us a chance to share some of the newest (and best) music we can find on the Internet.

A lot of DJ’s play what the crowd wants to hear, because that’s what they get paid for. Dennis and I play what’s new and what we thing you should be listening to next. You can get a link to download this Urban Jacksonville Mixtape before I post it on the blog, so be there and ask for the link.

Burrito Gallery
21 E Adams St (map)
Friday 8/21 Around 9:00pm on the patio

Lightboxing at Refresh Jacksonville

The Lightboxing bout opponents have been announced: Sean ‘Dog-n-Pony-Punch’ Tucker and Russel ‘The Muscle’ Quadros.

Lightboxing pits two designers against one another to create designs based on a particular theme, from products in a lightbox. The lightbox contains 6 images and/or typefaces.

The rules are simple: make something great. Use any software you want. Crop. Cut. Paste. Use filters. Fight dirty. Write copy. Make a knockout design. Judges then comment on the designs and choose a winner, using a highly sophisticated and completely subjective scoring system, based on originality, effectiveness, and gut reaction.

Here is their last head-to-head bout that we know of:

Russel at the Color of Munny Show

Thursday 8/20 @ 6:30pm

Urban Jacksonville Weekly with Terry Lorince from Downtown Vision

This Tuesday Terry Lorince from Downtown Vision will be our guest on the show. If you have questions for Terry or Downtown Vision, please leave a comment or send a Tweet in during the show.

Cliqset is a two-man development team in San Marco that has made some big news in national tech news, yet remains practically undiscovered by local media.

Cliqset, founded by Darren Bounds and Charlie Cauthen, is taking a shot at combining all of your user data that’s sure to be smeared in a hundred places across the internet.

It’s like this – if you have a profile and lots of friends on NotFacebook.com, and NotFacebook is using Cliqset profile info, and then you create a username on ILoveBurritos.com, your user data can come with you, keeping any existing friends, updates and profile info with you. Cool. Super cool.

I have no doubt that Cliqset has the vision and talent to pull this off, but any one familiar with the web knows that Google and OpenID are racing towards the same thing. What will keep Cliqset ahead of the game? One thing I think will help – their open API. At this point, anyone can take the heart of Cliqset, modify it any way they want and plug it into the user data of their own site.

In fact, Cliqset just announced a $30k developers challenge, ripe with big money prizes (I’m talking $5,000 and $10,000 chunks). If you think you have what it takes to develop some nifty Cliqset API wizardry, head over to the contest page.

A few ways to keep with the guys at Cliqset: the official Twitter feed, Darren’s personal twitter (almost 10k followers, I’m jealous) and the official blog.

CORRECTION: This is not a franchise from Charlottesville, VA. UNF graduate Alejandro Juarez is opening this Hightide Burrito. The article UNF grad brings burritos to San Marco community has many more details.
Hightide Burrito put up a sign this sometime this week announcing their arrival in San Marco. <del datetime="2009-05-08T18:26:17+00:00">It’s owned by Alex Juarez and appears to be a franchise out of Charlottesville, VA. From an article at charlottesville-dining.com</del>

High Tide has that beachy-Mexican fusion vibe to it, but with less of a California surfer dude and more of a Southern, Kenny Chesney feel to it.

Whoa! That’s an interesting mix. I honestly don’t care what the atmosphere is like, if the burritos are better than Moe’s, I’m down. Charlottesville reviews are mixed, but I’ll wait to reserve judgement until I try it myself. It will be a great new alternative to La Napolera and Panera, nGen Works lunchtime mainstays.

On a somewhat related note, the local coffee shop Uncommon Grounds, closed. I’m not sure how ling it’s been closed. I honestly hadn’t been there in months. I am a pretty discriminating consumer and i’ll always give somewhere a second chance. In the case of Uncommon Grounds I made it up to 5 or 6 chances before I gave up. I’m sad to see it go, but I can’t say I’m surprised.

Editors Note: This post was written by Tim Massett, the film programmer of San Marco Theater. Tim is also a friend of Urban Jacksonville.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad
San Marco Theatre
June 13th & 14th at 11:55pm

In 2003 the folks over at Vice were tipped off about the only metalband in Iraq, Acrassicauda. They became immediately obsessed:

We’re in Baghad to interview the only IRAQI heavy metal band called, ACRASSICAUDA, we have been calling them for three years and we needed to check in on them to see if they are still alive. This is risky, it s dangerous an people would say it s really fucking stupid for us to be doing this but uh… you know HEAVY METAL RULZ!! -Suroosh Alvi

The band formed during the reign of Saddam Hussein and even had the chance to play a few times while the country was still under his thumb. The band (and the people of Iraq) saw some relief after the initial invasion but then soon after the country began to spiral out of control. In 2005 Vice, despite mortars flying overhead and having to jump through an exhausting series of hoops, arranged a show for them at a hotel in Baghdad that went off without a hitch minus a short-lived power outage. Unfortunately that was to be the last show Acrassicauda would ever play in Iraq.

In 2006, through a precarious set of travel arrangements, the filmmakers make itto Baghdad to finally meet the band after all these years. What they find in Iraq is a “gangster’s paradise” — rampant kidnappings and up to 300 murders in a day. The filmmakers first hook up with Firas, the bass player, and discuss the current situation. He sums it up with “They took Ali-Baba and left the 40 thieves.” The band is on hiatus as Marwan has fled to Syria. The meeting arranged by Vice was the first time Firas and Faisal (best friends and bandmates) had seen each other in six months though they live 15 minutes apart.

The film presents a small but incredibly powerful window into the complete chaos the good ol US OF A helped to create through a common story to which every Westerner can relate …rock n roll. It seems to me that the existence of a bandlike Acrassicauda created under Saddam was evidence of the west s real secret weapon to overturn the tyrannical regime that was in place. It may have been a slower process but one that would have avoided the cataclysmic shock and suffering that has befallen the citizens of Iraq.

I don’t know whether or not you’ll come see Heavy Metal in Baghdad because of the time slot. Perhaps scheduling it as a midnight movie isn’t the smartest programming choice I have made but uh…you know HEAVY METAL RULEZ!!
