From now until Saturday evening, there will be no shortage of art related events. So far, I have counted seven that shouldn’t be missed. More on that later. For now, let’s just cover Art Walk.
“One Night Only” Bogda at Opaq Gallery from 5-9pm: Make sure you stop by OPAQ Wednesday, October 3rd (ArtWalk) to see some of Bogda’s favorite artists. Artists include: Amie Murray, Byron King, Jason Wright, Kelly Eason, Megan Cosby, Jason Leader, and Rachel Rosheck.
Then head over to MOCA for a silk-screen demonstration on the fifth floor by James Greene at 6pm. Then at 7pm, also at MOCA, there will be a very special advanced screening of Art21’s newest season. According to MOCA’s website, “The series provides behind the scenes views of the artists in their studios, homes and communities. The artists speak directly to the audience, in their own words, about how, why, and what they create.”

It was a busy weekend for art in Jacksonville. The crowds were out in full force. Whether it was to check out the work, socialize, or drink for free is still up in the air. Whatever the reason, it was a positive sign for the growing scene here.
If you weren’t able to make it out, you still have time to check out the shows. The Portent, I said Portent show at Pedestrian Projects will be up until the end of September; and the Bogda group show will run until the end of September as well.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to the Art House show on Friday, but if anyone has any comments or photos, feel free to post in the comment section.

There are a handful of options this weekend for when you are bored and trying to figure out what to do. Yeah!
I will be posting images from this weekend’s shows on Monday, so check back for that if you can’t make it out. But you really should go!
Friday, August 31st: Portent, I said Portent opens at Pedestrian Projects in San Marco

The show will feature the work of Mark Creegan, James Greene, Kurt Polkey, Byron King, and Brittni Wood.
Art House presents Art Run
Starts at 7pm
Marie Myers will host this special “art run” event in San Marco. Its an art auction/sale with proceeds going to support Kye Dixon, who is participating in the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco, which will support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Saturday, September 1st:
Group Show at Bogda
Starts at 8pm, ends at 11pm
This show will feature the work of Lyndsey Denyer, John Kester, Lara Summers, Tony Miller, Rachel Rosheck, Pat Lally, and many more.
On September 14 and 15 the San Marco Theater will be screening This is Spinal Tap and hosting Jacksonville’s first ever Guitar Hero II competition. This is huge if you’re a Guitar Hero fan, like myself. If you are not a Guitar Hero fan, or don’t even know what it is, watch this video:
Ok so now you know what Guitar Hero is. Imagine 12 people battling it out on a stage in front of a huge audience.
12 lucky contestants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their guitar hero prowess on the stage of the San Marco Theatre before a screening of Spinal Tap. Hosted by thee Shana David, the winner will not only be judged by score but by the overall chutzpah that the contestant demonstrates.
The winner will receive a trophy and a pitcher of beer for their efforts and will be immortalized as the first winners of this showdown and will be invited back to be challenged by the next round of winners.
If you are interested in competing email tim@sanmarcotheatre.com.
The roof at the JaxCore skateshop has totally collapsed. So much so that stuff is spewing out of the front window and on the street. I caught this picture as I was driving by. At the time there was a single news crew setting up. No additional details at this time. Leave a comment if you have any details.
If you haven’t heard Boomtown is moving to San Marco. They’ll be located on Hendricks Avenue across from the tennis courts and a few doors down from the Jaxcore skate shop.
Along with a collection of Ryan Rummel’s art on the walls, the new Boomtown location has four pre-opening events scheduled for the last two weekends in August.
I only have details on one event, Damian Lamarr will be performing on August 25th. The doors will open each night at 6, with dinner being served at 7 and the performances will begin shortly afterwards. The Ticket price is 25 dollars per person, all inclusive and guests for the performances will be served dinner, deserts and drinks.
It’s also interesting to note that:
We are really working on creating an unduplicateable experience for Faye Wood’s Boomtown Bistro, and I think we can confidently say that this new format hasn’t been experienced by Jacksonville Diners since the 1950s
Overall I think this will be a good addition to the exploding San Marco scene. It will be interesting to see how Boomtown works in a much smaller space than they are used to having.
Master Pankcake Theater is bringing its movie-mocking show from Austin, Texas to San Marco this weekend. Think Mystery Science 3000, but with contemporary movies instead of 50’s sci-fi.
Master Pankcake Theater is three guys from Austin who pair bad movies with live comedy. The San Marco theater was nice enough to write descriptions of each Master Pancake show complete with promos for each show.
My pick is definitely The One Man He-Man show:
John Erler (of the Alamo’s “Master Pancake Theater”) provides a one-man, live, alternate voice-over for the 80s animated movie He-Man and the Secret of the Sword. Based on the TV cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Secret of the Sword features all your favorite He-Man characters: Battle-Cat, Man-at-Arms, Beast Man, She-Ra, Tri-Klops and more! He will single-handedly be re-voicing and re-writing the original script liberally the night of the show.
All shows $9 or get the hotcake special which is all shows for $15
The Breakfast Club 7/27 @ 11:55pm
Pretty Woman 7/28 @ 9:30pm
The One Man He-Man show 7/28 @ 11:55pm

We finally found a video of Greg giving our Pecha Kucha Night presentation at MOCA Jacksonville during June’s Art Walk. Greg was the first ever to present at a Jacksonville Pecha Kucha Night…so dont’ be too critical. Minimal criticism is of course,
We have fantastic news...it looks like Downtown lunch hot-spot Zodiac Grill has finally decided to be open for the First Wednesday ArtWalk tomorrow night
Usually it takes close to 45 minutes to find all the things happening at Art Walk. What is going on? Is everyone scared D.A.R.T. going to line us up and search everyone? Help me out there has to be more notable things going on then this.
