80+ custom toys, live toy painting from 4 artists, DJ’s (me) and more. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to The Big Fun Box, an organization that provides activity kits to children who are hospitalized frequently and for extended periods.

Emerging Design Professionals’ Urban Facelift Competition

Entries to EDP’s Urban Facelift competition will be on display. The purpose of the Urban Facelift Project is to inspire property owners, business owners and the overall community by showing a building’s possibilities, seen through the eyes of the designer.

Monday morning at 9:30 we’ll be talking about TWO badd-ass art shows with Varick Rosete, AIGA President and Chad Landenberger designer and all around nice/awesome/award winning ‘stache guy.

80+ artists will have custom built, designed or painted toys on display. In addition to this visual feast there will be 4 artists “live painting” Mighty Muggs (Chad Landenberger • Clay Doran • Brian Gray & John O’Brian). Finally as an added bonus, I’ll be DJing along with DJ Squints all night at the show.

The 4th annual I’M BOARD art show is the next in a continuing installment of skateboard deck art shows. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to participate in this open call for entries. There are some submission guidelines, but I’m positive you can handle them. Submissions may be dropped off at BURRO Bags located at 1520 N. Main St. Jacksonville, FL Monday – Saturday 12-6pm.

A designer/illustrator living in Jacksonville, Florida. Varick has been drawing forever and it shows. He has a traditional print background, but his last 6 years have been about living and learning in the world wide web. Currently he is focusing on straight design and illustration, while learning more about animation and motion graphics.

Chad received his BFA in Fine Arts from the University of North Florida. Currently he is an Art Director at an advertising agency and is constantly evolving and refining his style. He has worked with such clients as Red Bull, Calvin Klein Golf, University of Jacksonville, Mellow Mushroom, and Burro Bags.

Refresh Jacksonville, in conjunction with AIGA Jacksonville, brings this amazing design event to Jacksonville.

What is Lighboxing?

Lighboxing was created by Veer. It pits two designers against one another to create designs based on a particular theme, from products in a lightbox. The lightbox contains 6 images and/or typefaces.

The rules are simple: make something great. Use any software you want. Crop. Cut. Paste. Use filters. Fight dirty. Write copy. Make a knockout design. Judges then comment on the designs and choose a winner, using a highly sophisticated and completely subjective scoring system, based on originality, effectiveness, and gut reaction.

If you believe you bleed, sweat and cry design…if you can think on your feet and respond with split-second reaction…if using Photoshop is second nature…then we’re calling on you to join us at Paul Figura’s studio on Thursday, August 20, 2009, for some Lightboxing! Some of the best creative minds Jacksonville has to offer will go head-to-head. Come see how interesting TWO designers can make the contents of ONE lightbox..

I’ve been tapped by the Jacksonville AIGA Chapter to participate in a roundtable discussion on web design this Thursday. I’ll be speaking with a fine lady and some fine fellows:

• What are the advantages to using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
• Is the Home Page more important then the Secondary Pages?
• What are the main things I need to know about web hosting?

AIGA Jacksonville and Font Bureau present re:CHARGE08, a 2.5 day conference designed to re-energize and inspire the creative monster living inside each of us through lectures, workshops, and social interaction with some of the design industry’s biggest talents.

re:CHARGE is two days of conference style activities, with some of graphic design’s biggest stars. It’s not often you see this type of talent come together in Jacksonville, much less experience it in such an intimate environment. Fresh from SXSW Interactive, which had over 5,000 attendees this year, it will be fun to experience such a high caliber event, without all the people.

I went to the last re:CHARGE, held at Flagler College in St. Augustine (the one before that was at UNF). My favorite thing about the last conference was interacting with the speakers. Meeting them, going out for drinks with them, etc. I’m happy AIGA Jacksonville decided to host the event Downtown, instead of a university. The conference should have a very cosmopolitan, urban feel to it.

re:CHARGE begins on Thursday with an opening roundtable “How Design Affects Small Business and Community”, but the real sessions begin on Friday and continue on Saturday. There are a total of 12 sessions, presented designers from around the country and around the city. This year’s line-up includes: Stephen Bucher, Juliet D’Ambrosio, Cyrus Highsmith, Sally Hogshead, Berwyn Hung, Jeff Matz, Debbie Millman, nGen Works, Matt Rollins, Christopher Simmons, Carl Smith, and Ann Willoughby.

I’m happy to say nGen Works, the company I work, for will have two sessions during the conference. One titled “Growing a Successful Creative Business” with Carl Smith and the other “Exploring The Creative Process” with Varick Rosete, Travis Schmeisser and possibly yours truly.

Pricing is a little steep unless you’re a design nerd, in which case the price is no object, or work is paying for it. If you want to check out the conference without breaking the bank, try the Keynote pricing which starts at $15 for student members and goes up to $40 for non-student/non-AIGA members.

If you don’t want to spend ANY money but still want to partake in this week’s most awesome downtown event there are two re:CHARGE related art shows you can check out at Art Walk. I’ll be posting more about both this this week. One is called Circuits and is at the Burrito Gallery. The other is student poster show at Opaq Gallery, above TSI. More on those later this week.
